✂ The Kuchisake-onna

The urban legend:

✂ A woman in a mask and trenchcoat appears before you. She asks one question: "Am I pretty?" Answering her in any way leads to the removal of her mask, revealing that her face has been slit open from ear to ear. She asks, "Am I still pretty?" This is where the stories vary -- Some say that saying "Yes" will spare your life! But there are some where saying "Yes" means she follows you to your home and cuts your throat in your own dooryard. Others still where she slices open your face to match hers. Some stories say that answering neutrally will keep you alive. And all of them agree that saying "No" or not answering will end in you being shivved by a large pair of shears.

In the Carved movies, the answer is almost always "Shivved to death".

Mayumi and the Slit-Mouthed Woman

✂ The Carved movies set up a strange precedent for the Slit-Mouthed Woman (Kuchisake-onna) where she is able to change host bodies. I'm taking info from both movies, but because of all the outright contradictions, here is how this works.

Mayumi is possessed by the spirit of the Woman. She can see the Woman out of the corner of her eye at times, but never well. Sometimes she feels like she's being stalked and she'll become very afraid. She is unaware that she has become this vessel!

The first movie shows us that the spirit is more than capable of switching host bodies just to kill. That is all she wants to do, and her target is ... anyone. She was probably drawn to Mayumi because of her wound and the hatred she was suppressing. The spiritually sensitive would probably be able to tell that something is not right, but this is a powerful, old, vicious spirit. She only wants to kill. That is all she will do. Killing the vessel means she finds a new one. In a way, she can never die.

When she kills, it is as herself! The Kuchisake-onna, a woman in a mask and red trenchcoat (but it's not always red! just in this movie!). Mayumi doesn't remember anything the spirit does, even when it's "her" vengeance. THIS IS IMPORTANT. In the movie, she doesn't realize that she is the killer because everyone saw a woman in a red coat, but they didn't see Mayumi.

Mayumi does not have a red coat.

Here is how death works for Mayumi: You can kill her. Sure you can! Her sister does it. But she will come back out of that grave, and she will take her revenge. As soon as those responsible have been punished, she will lose herself entire; She is no longer "Mayumi". She is the Kuchisake-onna.

For the purposes of camp, if you kill her a second time (or, uh, get a friend to... ) the Moogles will intervene and bring her back as Mayumi. She won't remember, because she is not from the part of the movie where she finally realizes there is a demon inside her. And if it takes too long, the Moogles will fix it! They will just totally charge her for it.

✂ Bored now

IF YOUR CHARACTER IS JAPANESE! OR IF THEY KNOW URBAN LEGENDS/DEMONS AT ALL! They will most likely know the story of the Kuchisake-onna. THIS IS COOL. Mayumi would ping anyway for the Japanese kids, because she looks the part. I don't care if you play a demon hunter who knows these things. You don't have to comment or anything unless you want me to explain things better (I suck at explaining things right now).

BASICALLY: She looks like this creepy urban legend of death and horror. Because she is. 8|d
