Food Fetish Follies

Yesterday at the Farmers Market we were thrilled to find rainbow chard at one of the vendors' stalls. Which brought home once again how truly foreign NE Wisconsin is vittle-wise for a former Bay Area foodie. On the one hand, meat and dairy in the supermarkets here are much cheaper and of excellent quality. On the other hand, greens don't seem to ( Read more... )

I'm not sure how difficult it is to get from the Fox River Valley to Madison, but we now have a Trader Joe's here (which you may already have visited) which has all kinds of West Coast products. The one in Madison is only about two blocks from where we live, so it's very convenient for us, anyway. We love TJ's and so do a lot of other people--it's usually crowded except for weekday mornings. People seem to be coming from very far away to get to it--we can see why. You probably shopped at a TJ's on the West Coast--I understand they're all over the place there and very popular. This post sound like Richard and I own stock in the place but we're just fans .

Two blocks from Trader Joe's (envy, envy)! You bet, we used to shop there all the time when we lived in the Bay Area. Madison is about 100 miles from here (here being Appleton), but neither of us drives and it would take close to 8 hours on the bus -- you have to go to Milwaukee and lay over -- so we haven't been down there yet. Did you know that at least one other member of the_mirador lives in Madison? Her userid is sasha_feather.

I see from your profile that you (Perri) are retired; my husband and I are both retired too, isn't it wonderful?!

Yes, we know sasha_feather is here but haven't made contact. Sarah Monette is also in the close vacinity but we only see her at Odyssey Cons and WisCons. In fact, Richard was on an OddCon panel with SM on "Tolkien: the book and the movie" in 2005. We've seen her on a number of convention panels. She's just as articulate in person and has just as many wonderful things to say as she has to write. Very acommodating to her fans, as well.

I find retirement something of a mixed bag: one finally finds time to do all the interesting things that one didn't have time to do when one was working; but then one also has time to do all the unpleasant things that one has been postponing--using work as an excuse not to tackle them previously. I, personally, do better at accomplishing the former rather than the latter!
