Shoes work just as well. Less damage if you miss. I have a robin that cries out an alarm when my cat is on my back porch. For the entire time my cat is there. It gives me a headache and just so annoying! Yes, there is a predator near by. We all know. I am doing my best to curb his killing instincts but he will still go after animals.

I had a neighbor tell me they wanted to borrow him because they have a mouse. He is a good mouser.

It might not even require being a good mouser, the mere presence of a cat in the house seems to be a deterrent. Friends of ours never had a mouse when they still had their cat, even though he was very elderly and arthritic. We do get mice now and then. The first time, we sent away for a Hav-a-heart trap, which they may have used to square-dance on top of, but it sure never trapped any of them. So now we get this kind that has a plastic cover on it and works quite well; it's supposed to be reusable but neither of us can bear to empty it so we just throw the whole thing away! (they're pretty cheap)
