Chapter 15 The night between
Blaise woke up slowly, and with a slight ache in his back. But he felt comfortable, rested and there was a warm buzz going through his body, which was enjoyable.
He only noticed then that Severus' fingers were still moving through his hair. His inability to describe the feeling of wellbeing that flooded him was slightly annoying. Then again, he was not required to put his feelings into words, and that helped a lot.
He carefully moved his fingers, letting them slide beneath the hem of Severus' trousers, caressing the skin there. Blaise sometimes wondered what it would take for Severus to have warm ankles, because whenever he touched Severus there, the skin was always cold.
"Better?" Severus asked, voice soft.
"Yes, thank you. I am still a bit tired, and there is an ache in my back, but otherwise I feel fine," Blaise answered slowly, while feeling through his own body.
"Understandable. It has been a long day. I suggest dinner, before a warm, relaxing shower and then bed. For the both of us," Severus stated.
Hearing this, Blaise turned his head around and looked up to Severus questioningly.
"Pet, you are pregnant and I am old. Also there are some things we have to clarify. But neither you nor I are up to such a conversation now. We will take it easy for the evening. However we shall also discuss things in the morning, after breakfast."
Severus tone brooked no argument. Blaise had none because in a way, he understood what Severus was saying. With a nod, Blaise got up slowly, making a soft hissing noise as his joints had become stiff, something he was not used to.
"I tell you, this pregnancy thing is not at all agreeing with my body," Blaise complained, before he sighed deeply, well aware that it would become a lot worse before it would get better. And, as if to torture him his mind produced the image of the pregnant bearded man, who, so muggles believe, brought them gifts. He would become awfully huge, waddle around like a snooker ball on legs. Hopefully, though, he would not grow a beard, because that would be just over the top.
"You will be grateful to know then, that it won’t last forever," Severus replied dryly.
Blaise tried his best to disintegrate Severus with his glare, consequences be damned. Sadly, all he achieved with that was yet another raised eyebrow, and a small moving of the lips, showing Severus' amusement.
"You will also be grateful to know, that I won’t let you suffer too much. And I have been told, on occasion, that my massages are truly amazing."
The purr with which the last words where said, made Blaise's blood rush. Oh yes, Severus indeed knew how to give good massages. He felt boneless after each and every one of them, never to mention that the sex interluding the massage was more than just fantastic. It didn't even matter if his hands or feet were bound, or there was a gag in his mouth or a blindfold over his eyes, Severus simply knew how to play with his body.
"Dinner, now. Lead the way to where we shall take it," Severus commanded, taking a look around the room.
"Depends where you want to eat? Small dining room, large dining room, the gallery dining room, the summer dining room, the spring dining room, the- "
"Understood, you have a lot of dining rooms, for whatever reason. What is the one you like the most?" Severus asked in a slightly annoyed voice.
"Actually, there is only one other dining room, but I shall refrain from mentioning it. And most of the time I eat in the oriel salon. It has a nice atmosphere and a calming view," Blaise answered in his usual cheeky fashion.
He would be lying if he were to say that having Severus in his home wasn‘t strange, because it was. And the fact that he himself only came here when he wanted to be alone didn‘t help to make it any less weird. But, at the same time, and that was the most confusing part, he was happy that Severus was here: that they were planning on living here, on raising their munchkin here. As a child he especially liked to explore all the different parts of the manor, to get to know all the people in the portraits, to play hide and seek here. And the Zabini family, as an old pure-blood family, had some impressive wards on the grounds and the house to keep the heir safe.
"Blaise?" Severus called, pulling Blaise back out of his thoughts. "The way to the salon?"
"Certainly, if you were to follow me, please," Blaise grinned and made a small bow before leading Severus back up to the door through which they entered his rooms, and then down to the third floor.
"This patio was built when the wards around the property were failing, but the family did not want to give up on growing their own ingredients. Back then more than thirty adult Zabinis lived here. The most fascinating thing is that this part of the house is only three floors high, since otherwise it would cut the patio off from the sunlight, but the patio itself goes all the way down to the ground floor. Each high bed of flowers is set up in a specific pattern as to facilitate the needs of each plant. There are some fascinating diaries in our library, if you are interested in that sort of thing," Blaise said.
Blaise felt more than he saw Severus nodding. He wasn't sure why he was trying so hard to fill the silence with conversation that clearly neither of them were up to. Maybe it was his insecurity about the food? But then, he never noticed Severus being particularly picky about his food. He certainly knew how to enjoy a good meal, but not even once had Blaise heard him complain about any sort of food.
With a small sigh of relief Blaise noted the already served dinner on the round table put in front of the oriel window. Without thinking, he sat down at his usual seat, which offered him a nice view over the grounds.
Without any sort of objection Severus sat down in the chair next to his, and they started their meal. It was only after the first few bites, that Blaise realised how tired he already was, even with the nap before. The act of chewing was a chore, and he had the feeling that his eyelids grew heavier with each bite he took.
"Come, a shower and then it is off to bed with you. And you will take a sip of the blue potion tonight. Forgoing sleep for a more comfortable morning only has a benefit for so long, and I believe you are well past that time frame," Severus said and got up, after putting his napkin down again.
Instead of following Blaise back to his room, he now had his hand in the small of Blaise's back, pushing him along ever so gently. It made something inside of Blaise go all fuzzy and warm, and made his longing for his bed even stronger.
"I presume there is a bathroom somewhere behind one of these doors?"
Blaise threw Severus a raised eyebrow: "You may presume that, yes."
If Severus wanted to be obtuse so could Blaise. And playing a little increased Blaise's mood by a margin.
"Careful boy. If you are going to be difficult, I might change my mind, and have you wait on me," Severus replied, letting his voice drop an octave deeper. "And we both know that mistakes are not something I overlook," was added with a warning in the voice.
Blaise gulped, before leaning a bit closer into Severus: "Straight ahead through the next two doors, which will lead us into the bed chamber, and it will be the door on the right."
It was an easy capitulation, but for once it was not only because of his tiredness. Severus was right, they had to talk about... well about all the stuff they so far have been avoiding. Having Severus hint at a punishment inside of these rooms was... weird. There had been a spike of excitement, but at the same time Blaise felt incredible weird. He wondered if that was due to the fact that in these rooms he had always been able to do and act as he pleased. And if that was true how would a life with Severus fit into it all? Because the fact of the matter was that the only relationship they knew how to have was the one with Severus as the Master. And suddenly, with a few thoughts this whole change-thing they were trying became rather Herculean in task.
It was only when Severus opened the second door as advised that Blaise realised that this was the first time in over a decade that Severus had entered his bedroom... theirs now, if they were going to stay in that part of the house, but that was beside the point now. Especially since Severus did not even comment on the room, but just moved over to the bathroom door. Severus could indeed be infuriating even, or especially, when taking care of Blaise.
With a sly grin however, Blaise noticed that the bathroom at least received a reaction from Severus, as they stopped in the doorway.
Before them, the fine black marble, Italian original spread over the floor. The only part not covered in black marble was the walk in shower, which was done in Pavonazzo marble, that also covered the shower wall. The shower was separated from the room with a huge sheet of polished glass. Pavonazzo marble covered the washstand with the laid in basins. The rest of the walls were done in a nice blue-grey paint down to the floor and bringing the Pavonazzo marble to a bigger shine. On the opposite side of the door, huge windows with black frames let in natural light, while this late in the evening their light was coming from a large chandelier 1. In front of the windows stood the marble - rather modern due to the asymmetrical form - bathtub. The room had flair, and through there was a lot of stone used in it, it left a rather warm impression.
"I did mention that husband number thirteen did the bathroom. He was Italian himself. Oddly enough he managed to stick around for a few years, though I am not certain if it was because my mother wanted him too, or he was just cleverer than the others," Blaise said.
"Explains the Italian flair of the bathroom," Severus replied as he entered the bathroom. "He must have been an impressive man, no matter why he managed to hang around. Did you like him?"
This time it was Blaise who stopped and stared. Nobody had ever asked him if he liked his mother’s husbands. Plenty of people asked what he thought of certain husbands, and how they behaved, but never how he felt about them. It was odd.
"I think he tried to be somewhat of a father figure to me. When I turned sixteen, he told me how to smoke and drink. And how to flirt with women in a more grown-up way. It was... nice, in a way. I mean, my mother and I are somewhat close but in a very specific way. It’s hard to describe, as I guess is true for everybody. But most of the husbands never bothered with me, outside of greetings and polite conversations. I remember when I was smaller, there were some who flat-out refused to acknowledge me, to their own detriment, as the number of husbands prove. Maybe that was why husband thirteen managed to stick around; maybe my mother didn't want to take him away from me too soon. But really that is all speculation," Blaise thought more out loud than stated, because he didn't know the truth.
Severus helped him undress, but otherwise stayed silent, and for a moment Blaise feared he had said too much.
"So, this husband number thirteen the only father figure, or did you manage to bond with one of the others as well?" Severus then asked, starting to remove his own clothes.
Blaise, a bit awed by the fact that Severus apparently planned to shower with him - something that had happened before, but usually because they didn't want to stop what they were doing, while at the same time being too sticky due to various things to continue in bed - needed a few moments to understand the asked question.
"Eehm, well, in some regard, Lucius was a sort of father figure, when I spent some weeks in summer with Draco in France or Switzerland. But more than that, it was Adrian who was like a big brother to me, though Draco never warmed up to him. My mother goes way back with his. So, when we were over he was forced to entertain me. After he came back from his first year, and was too cool to hang out with silly kids like me, he had spelled me on the wall, and then made me listen to all his stories about Hogwarts. I would have listened anyway because all I knew were the stories Draco weaselled out of his parents. My mother never attended Hogwarts, so Adrian was a better source." Blaise grinned. "I should probably write him as well, before the rumours start. He has a mean itching hex, perfected over five years in school." Blaise had stepped into the shower and turned on the water, waiting for Severus.
He wondered if it was normal to talk about such mundane things as father figures while going for a shower with your lover. Was this peculiar? He also realised that he had no clue about things lovers do, and how they do it, when there was no sex involved. He had only ever been with Severus, in a way that had suited them both. He would be lying if he said that this change was unwelcome, but just tripping through every single tiny thing already annoyed him.
"Pucey? The last I heard he was on his way to become an excellent charms teacher, though he refused the position at Hogwarts, when Flitwick retired," Severus said, stepping into the warm spray behind Blaise.
"Private tutor in charms and he picked up transfiguration along the way. It's a money and time thing for him. Though he is interested in the challenge, he does not want to suffer through seven grades worth of essays to correct. At the moment he is teaching somewhere in Germany. Really old pure-blood family, but apparently his ward comes with a very forward-thinking older sister." Blaise grinned, while Severus started to wash his hair.
"Somehow, I can certainly see his influence. You both are as wicked as they come, but you managed to hide it very well, with proper connections and a rather clean reputation," Severus joked. Or at least it sounded like a joke to Blaise.
"We know how to be nice to the right people. Also, we lack the aspiration for anything truly disastrous to happen. Adrian wants to be renowned and I... well, I already got what I wanted the most, so the rest is all for entertainment," Blaise boldly stated, while turning around and kissing Severus softly.
So maybe this whole showering without sex thing wasn't so bad at all. It felt rather cosy and nice right now.
"Wicked, Blaise. But with a certain tenacity that I can, and do admire."
"I can't be the only wicket one here, Mister double agent. And when it comes to tenacity, I certainly have still a lot to learn from you," Blaise replied, while he started washing Severus' hair.
It was a risk, because Severus hardly liked to talk about his past. But it was a fact, and it proved more than anything that Severus Snape was certainly capable holding his own amongst the most wicked of them all.
"I shall make certain that I teach you well, then. And that your bad habits won't go unpunished," Severus replied, a glint in his eyes, before his hand smacked Blaise square on his backside.
Joke accepted.
As they both rinsed the potions out of their hair, Blaise relaxed more into the situation. This was good, and it felt good too. Even, or maybe especially, to his tired mind.
"Your elves are rather efficient," Severus remarked, as they dried themselves with the prepared towels.
Blaise shrugged his shoulders. They were elves; of course they did their job well. Most of them came from long lines of elves serving the Zabini family.
He blinked a few times, trying to make sense of what was in front of his eyes, before, with a deep sigh, he took the blue flask from Severus and drowned the potion. The fact that he had to fight the urge to smile, was of course completely unrelated to the situation. Completely.
When they finally lay in bed next to each other, Blaise huddled close to Severus, enjoying the heat the other man gave off. With a rather relieved sigh, he dropped off into sleep again.
1 i really wanted to use “lustre” here not only because i think it adds to the italian flair but also because it adds to the flair of the overall story, but i was told that lustre in english means “shinging, glittering” .... so for the reason of convenience i changed it, but i have the urge to make my protest known, so here it is, notice my protest!
