Breakfast with Mother

They had just entered the winter garden and his mother was right there.

"Blaise, darling. I could not believe what you wrote," she said and came to hug him. "But I see it is true. How dashing you look. But then, of course, Zabinis always took beautifully to pregnancy. I remember people telling me how the glow of motherhood was becoming."

Blaise hugged her back, but was rather overwhelmed by her enthusiasm and by her remarks about his pregnancy. It wasn't like he ever envisioned a particular reaction from his mother towards his pregnancy, but the one he received felt off.

"Mother, I am glad you could come," Blaise said, hoping he sounded more sincere than he felt. After his mother let him go from the hug, he added: "May I also introduce Severus Snape to you, though of course you know him already."

"I do indeed, darling. Mister Snape, what an interesting circumstance we find ourselves in," she greeted Severus, making Blaise want to hide somewhere far away from her. Why did his mother always need to be so dramatic?

"Indeed. Though I must say, I prefer these circumstances compared to the past occasions when we had reason to meet."

And then Blaise remembered that Severus, too, had a flair for the dramatic, though the man himself liked to deny it.

"Shall we sit down for breakfast?" Blaise asked in hopes of moving the scene along and getting what already seemed like a long morning over with.

"Certainly. After all, it is already prepared, and we have much to discuss."

The euphemism with which his mother answered caused a sense of doom in Blaise. It was never good for him when his mother had 'much to discuss'. Usually, it was either another wedding he had to attend, or a convoluted plan to enrich the family. Since he highly doubted that his mother wanted to parade around her pregnant son, he had a rather good notion of what was coming. And it did nothing for his nerves to feel Severus's hand at his lower back, though the sense of safety that spread through that hand was a surprise to Blaise.

"Shall we go straight to business, or are we to exchange some pleasantries first?" his mother asked in a sweet voice.

"I notice that you have changed your principle about doing business in the morning," Blaise said as he sat down opposite his mother.

"If needs must, darling. Sometimes, one is obligated to partake in things during those hours which are usually so sacred to one. However, I am willing to adhere to your wishes, of course." His mother sighed and took a sip of her coffee.

"Then I would prefer to get straight to business. The pleasantries can be observed later, and we may at that point even be able to find some enjoyment in them," Severus stated and reached for the black tea.

"Severus - I may call you Severus, may I not? - I agree with your reasoning, especially as I had a good cause to rush back to Britain," Senzafiona said, flipping her hair behind her shoulder. "Blaise, darling, remind me of the most important rule of the Zabini- family, if you please?"

The intense stare his mother shot at him with confused Blaise for a moment. What had he done wrong now?

"If you have to spend a fortune, make sure you earn at least a fortune twice as large back," he cited with confidence. "It is the rule lived by Hectatus Zabini, who laid the foundations for our success."

"Yes, darling, but that is the estate-rule. I asked you about the family-rules," she said. At Blaise's confused look she added: "Though, I might have been remiss of teaching them to you."

It was the heavy tone that made Blaise suddenly remember that the Zabinis as a family have three rule books to follow: The Estate Book, The Society Book and The Family Book. And though he had read them all once, he only ever concerned himself with the first two. Like his mother he presumed that he still had time to study and incorporate the last.

"As a Zabini, you are not allowed to give birth out of wedlock", his mother stated, covering her toast in butter.

Blaise sat up straight, throwing a swift glace at Severus before he asked "What are you saying?"

"Well, you have heard me. One of our ancestors, I believe it was Marcus the Fourth, he wanted to prove his adherence to the Christian faith and the pope in the Dark Ages because, well you have heard of the great witch-hunting that came over Italy; it was a trying time. Sadly, Marcus also believed that hogwash and laid down a Blood Curse. I won't bother you with the Old-Italian version, though I am certain your grandfather did. Roughly translated it says something like: If a Zabini is born a bastard, he shall die a bastard before the third sun rises, and the mother to this spawn shall feel the anger of the whole family." Senzafiona sighed heavily. "Apparently it is not stated clearly what the "anger of the whole family" means. There is one case, Patricia Cesaria Zabini, and the granddaughter of Marcus, who truly burned alive, but there is also the case of Jacque Hadrian Zabini in the late sixteen hundreds who was just burned from the family tree, and lost all his claim to the Zabini family. Of course his daughter did not survive, though he managed to get adopted into the muggle family his lover came from. Maybe it was for the best, that there was no child." She finally raised her head. "I am sorry, darling, but you must marry, for the safety of your child as well as yours. This is Blood Curse by our own ancestor and head of the family back then; there is no way around it."

Blaise could not move a muscle. His throat was dry and he could not make his lips move to even form any sort of answer. The thing is, he had heard about it before of course. It was one of the three Blood Curses, and the one his grandfather had been most proud of. He simply had forgotten about it. And a wizard without the grounding ties to a family becomes a danger not only to himself, but to everybody and everything around him.

He didn't even dare to look at Severus. This was going to be the end of whatever they were trying to build.

"A simple marriage before the birth would satisfy the curse?" Severus asked, his voice as bland as the grey sky.

If Blaise only knew what he was supposed to do? But there was nothing to be done...

"It would, yes," his mother agreed simply.

But Blaise grew even more weary. She was hiding something. He had no idea what it could be, but he was certain this was not the end of it at all.

"Well, that should give us enough time. A January wedding would be acceptable, and Blaise should be more comfortable around that time as well, since we are still trying to figure out the right balance for his potion regime," Severus said easily.

"That would be more than acceptable. It also would give us time to deal with another issue."

The smooth voice his mother spoke in grated on Blaise's nerves.

"Bloody well knew it," he mumbled into his tea cup. And. though his mother gave no indication of having heard him, the strong hand on his thigh made it clear that Severus had.
