The Future, Cake and Love

Harry sighed inaudible as he failed again to take in any words of the sentence he tried to read. His only comfort was, that Draco was stuck with him studying too. The difference was that Draco knew what he wanted but Draco's path was made exceptionally hard for him. Harry himself was just lost with what he wanted to do.

He could admit to Draco that he was right and ask him for help, but that would involve admitting to Draco, that the prat was right. Harry huffed. Really Draco was way too often right, and somehow he was glad for never being the person who had to face Draco in court. If Draco will ever get to see the court.

Harry sighed again, this time not bothering to hide it. All their friends were already out of training, and he was aware that Draco would be too, if the Ministry didn't force him to take each of the 347 exams of law. Normally there would be shortcuts- like with particular grand exams one can achieve more than just the pass for this exam. But not for Draco. Five years and he has still about ninety exams left- at least another two years.

Harry would love to complain about the unfairness of it all, march into the ministry and make them see reason. But Draco forbid him to do so. Draco wanted to become a lawyer all by himself, and Harry has no doubt he would do so, and due to all his extra study, that most of his fellow students did not take, he will be far better than all the others. But still there are bad weeks- and this one was one of the worse.

Not so much for Draco, Harry was certain, if he ever had known how much like Hermione Draco was, they may not be in this relationship.

He sighed again. What was he supposed to do?

The crux of it all was, that he really need to find a specialty now. The hospital would not grant him another internship otherwise. And he really was sick of the general wards.

"You know you don't have to force yourself through this," Draco said, his voice soft.

"But otherwise I will not have a job comes March," Harry answered ragging his fingers through his hair.

"And oh, the tragic, you will lose your house- which you don't use- and all your earnings- on which you don't depend," Draco rolled his eyes, before he shut his book and came over to the couch, taking a seat on the small table, on top of Harry's notes.

The flat had a perfectly serviceable study, furnished for the both of them- neither of them has ever used it. Somehow they only stack up the materials they didn't immediately need in there. Draco would always study at the kitchen bar and Harry would find himself on this very lovely sofa, with the couch table as his desk. After more than four years, its routine.

"It's not going to work Harry. What do you want to prove by continuing this?"

Draco looked so sincere that Harry was lost for words.

"You stuck to it this long, give it a rest," Draco pleaded with him, and Harry shook his head.

"I can't. I can't quit now. I'm not a quitter! And what will everybody say? Harry Potter unable to make the right choice yet again. And for sure they will make something up about this all being your bad influence or what not," Harry dropped his head into his hands, sighing again.

The truth was he liked healing until the point he has to see that even in a world of magic not everyone could be saved. It's this fear that didn't allow him to go into Pediatrics or even worse Dark Arts Reversals.

He also was no good on the Spell Damage Ward, more often than not potions nullified the effects of spells, and the truth that Draco never said is that he still sucked at potions, even with all the help from Draco.

"Why do you want to punish yourself for the rest of your life? This makes no sense," Draco said trying to keep his temper at bay.

"You are sticking to it, through all the shit the force you to do? To all the pro bono stuff and the ridiculous exams," Harry retaliated, shaking his head.

"But I want to become a lawyer! You clearly are not made out to be an healer. The last time a patient died, you weren't yourself for nearly a week. Potter, see reason, this is not your life to be!"

Harry flinched at the Potter. It still had it same old ring to it, but it also hammered the truth home.

"I know" he shouted back. "I just don't know what else to do. I started the healer program so to not join the Aurors, yet again I seemed to have made a mistake. What is there for me to do, Draco? What is left for me to do?" he asked, feeling utterly defeated.

There was the sound of deep breathtaking, Draco clearly calming himself.

"Well, I for one have numerous things for you to do. I also find myself fairly sure there is a good use to your hands, and especially to your lips, when they are not busy talking utter nonsense," Draco smiled and leaned ever so slightly forward a challenge in his eyes.

Harry couldn't really fight the grin that was spreading on his lips, before . Draco could be so crazy sometimes, so full of wit and himself, and Harry was charmed by him each day a little more.

The kiss was warm, welcoming and Harry had to held back a snicker: "You've been snacking on cake!" he exclaimed, ending the kiss, because he wasn't able to hold the laughter in.

Draco straightened his back, but the blushing on his cheeks was all the evidence Harry would ever need.

"Might've, maybe... you've no prove," Draco mumbled, turning his head gracefully to the side.

"Accio cake," Harry said and saw the plate with a huge colorful cake rise from underneath the bar, where Draco's books lay.

"Prove," Harry grinned, "I think I found it," Harry said triumphantly.

"Would've shared it," Draco keeps mumbling.

"I know you would, you shared all your cakes with me. The biggest sweet tooth ever walking around in Britain, but still I got a taste from all the sweets you ate," Harry traced Draco's cheek, before he took the folk for a taste of the cake.

"I'm sharing everything with you, Harry," Draco whispered in Harry's ear, caressing Harry's arm.

"I'm scared Draco, what if there is nothing out there, that I want to do either?" Harry whispered.

"Eat some cake Harry, the answered will come later, and the future will be so much sweeter with the taste of cake," Draco said, kissing Harry's cheek.

"Que sera?" Harry smiled.

"Whatever you say, Harry," Draco rolled his eyes, "as long as it involves you and chocolate, and me being the best lawyer around I really don't care about the future," Draco said, grabbing the folk and taking a huge bite of cake.

"For a chocolate cake future, and for you being an amazing lawyer so you will be able to keep me, I shall eat this cake," Harry smiled, and took another bite.

The future would have to wait, until Harry was able to decide what he would like to make out of it. For now cake and Draco was more than good enough.
