She was shocked by the huge number of people that made up the crowd in the stadium, and soon after realized the enormous number of people that made up the country of Japan. She said that she had thought herself special and unique up until that point, but something changed in the young Haruhi after that game. All of the interesting people and experiences in her life became ordinary, commonplace, and fairly meaningless, since they were happening all across Japan, and all over the world. Her world began to "lose its color", as she said, and she became increasingly bored with her ordinary life. She was convinced that there had to be someone in the world living an extraordinary life, since there were so many people that inhabited it. Even with this drive, Haruhi was frustrated that she was not this chosen person. She eventually realized that fun and exciting things wouldn't come to her if she sat around waiting, and that was when she changed.
In middle school, Haruhi gained a widespread reputation, though it encompassed a number of descriptions. She was said to be beautiful, talented, and smart, all of which were true, though she held no regard for any of these normal qualities. She was also said to be extremely eccentric, strange, and a bit "out-there"...and with good reason. She allegedly drew alien symbols on the school grounds one night, moved all of the desks out into the hallway for no reason, and continuously agreed to date and promptly dumped many different young men, among many other bizarre experiences. Her classmates learned to accept it, stopped trying to befriend the enigmatic Haruhi, and took her nature in stride.
In high school, her resilient, stubborn, anti-social nature took a turn for the better, some might say, but for a young man named Kyon, it took a turn for the worse. Kyon, who sat in front of her in homeroom, began to talk to her on a daily basis, usually only recieving curt and irate responses from the long-haired girl. Once he began delving into the topics of her ever-changing hairstyles (which, of course, had to do with aliens), she began to respond. However, the next day Kyon came in to find that Haruhi had cut all of her beautiful hair off, and was taken aback by her drastic response to their conversation. The real impact of his presence did not occur until she complained about the school's lack of interesting clubs.
Kyon suggested that she make her own club, and the rest, as they say, is history. Haruhi was thrilled with the idea, and declared that Kyon would help her to make a new club. He was stuck with most of the work, because while Haruhi is not necessarily a lazy person, she takes pride in her ability to delegate "less important" jobs to her "subordinates". Soon enough the club was formed, and she called it the "Spreading Excitement All Over the World With Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade", or the SOS Brigade, for short. Shortly after she brought the timid, innocent Mikuru Asahina in to be the club's trademark "moe character", inherited the literary club's remaining member, the silent Yuki Nagato, and eventually invited Itsuki Koizumi, a "mysterious transfer student", to be members of the Brigade.
She said that they would all search for aliens, time-travelers, and ESPers, and "hang out with them". Everything was not as it seemed, however.
In reality, Mikuru Asahina was a time-traveler. Yuki Nagato was an alien. And Itsuki Koizumi was an ESPer. Kyon, luckily, was a normal human, delegated with the important responsibility of keeping Haruhi from becoming bored. Why? Because she, ironically enough, has the power to create and destroy worlds, depending on her mood. It is a subconscious power that she knows nothing of, and some fear that if she learned of the existance of all of these wonderful, extraordinary things, something catastrophic might occur. And this is where her story picks up, just another day in the life of the SOS Brigade.
[Personality] Her personality? Well, depending on who you are, it can vary. Haruhi is strong-willed, stubborn, quick-tempered, competitive, hyperactive, ruthless, and outgoing. She can be said to be selfish, as she often does whatever it takes to get what she wants, but she certainly has morals and values and eventually realizes (though perhaps does not admit) when she is in the wrong. Haruhi cares very much for the Brigade, and expends all of her time and energy into promoting it and acting on it. She also reacts strangely to praise, since most of the things she does are not things, as Kyon puts it, that normally merit praise. She is not afraid of the opinions or views of others, as she often changes clothes in front of her classmates, wears skimpy bunny girl outfits to advertise the Brigade, and replies with indifference to anyone's skeptical opinion toward her interests.
Sometimes, Haruhi lets things go too far. Much further than usual, which is already too far, many would say. For example, in The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, she allows Mikuru to be given alcohol to loosen her up a bit for a movie, and is frustrated when the timid girl still doesn’t meet her expectations. She doesn’t realize (recognize, really) the other girl’s aversion to being exploited, but as usual, Kyon points it out for Haruhi. When the god-like girl refuses to change her vision to accommodate someone else’s needs, Kyon attempts to hit her, but is physically stopped by Koizumi. Even after this startling incident, Haruhi still reacts with angry, indignant, and raging fury, refusing to change her mind even when faced with direct opposition from Kyon.
[Specialties/Abilities] Though some claim her to be a god, one thing stands true…she has great power. When she becomes bored enough, or when most of her negative emotions runs high, she relieves her stress by (unconsciously) having huge, sparkling giants in another dimension smash up buildings and the like. These Shinjin, or Celestials, continue to destroy until a group like Itsuki’s Organization destroy them. In this world of grey, or “closed space”, it is crucial that the ESPers stop the Shinjin before they destroy everything. To Haruhi, the unknowing one, it’s just anger management.
She also has the power to create and destroy worlds, supposedly, and can influence her surroundings depending on what she wants. Prime examples of this are the talking cat and dangerous laser-eyes in The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, the strange murder mystery in Remote Island Syndrome, and the repetition of a few weeks in August in Endless Eight, to name a few.
As for normal abilities, she is exceptionally talented in various fields, including athletics, school, and music.
[Affection] Haruhi isn't afraid to be touchy-feely, but is hesitant about others doing this to her. She might raise an eyebrow, or even punch you in the face, so be careful. But if she latches on to you, it's perfectly normal.
[Fighting] She's a teenaged girl, so it wouldn't be extraordinarily hard to hurt (or even kill) her. However, it is unknown what would happen to the world if she were to be killed, so it's a gamble. She's pretty fast, so evasion would be a strong point for her.
[Other Permissions] Unless they would have a reason to know that she's a god, they probably shouldn't. Aside from Kyon, the Brigade, aliens related to the Data Integration Thought Entity, Mikuru's time-traveling associates, or Koizumi's Organization, then they probably wouldn't know.
