Newfoundland

I've probably never talked about it before, but I'm very proud of where I'm from. I'm definitely biased, but I think I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world with such a unique and fascinating history. Sometimes I get in these moods where I just am overwhelmed with how much I love where I'm from (and not in a patriotic-wearing-the- ( Read more... )

The different coloured buildings in the downtown area are nicknamed Jellybean Row! :)

O Canada indeed! You do live in a beautiful part of the world. And that first picture - just wow! Reminds me of Scandinavia a lot, as a lot of their cities and towns feautre multi-coloured houses which look really lovely.

I've heard that from tourists a number of times (we also get San Francisco from the colourful houses and the hills). Our landscape really does vary, and not all the pictures I included show that. It goes from rocky cliffs and scraggy pine forests on my part of the Avalon peninsula, to barrens (with caribou!) on the southern part of the Avalon, to birch forests inland, and waterfalls and valleys on the west coast. It's just, we're so tiny, but there's so much to see.

Yes! It is a little like San Francisco although those houses aren't quite so bright I think. Your province maybe small but it's probably still bigger than my whole country!

Are we talking just the island portion of Newfoundland, or Labrador as well? And are we talking just England, or all of the United Kingdom? Because Labrador is pretty big, but also a lot of uninhabited areas (that were largely unexplored until the late 1800s, I believe. You should check out Lure of the Labrador Wild were a guy tried to hike across Labrador in the winter with not enough food and not listening to any local guides and, you know, died ( ... )

I'll eventually get out East and tour the provinces, but so far the farthest I've been is Toronto. I work with a few people who are from NFL or NS and came here just for work, so they've told me somewhat about what life is like out there. One guy says in NS when it gets to be -20, schools close because it's a completely different kind of cold than what we have here.

It's pretty much the same here. You guys have a dry cold, so even when it's -20 it's not dangerous to be outside. I went to Toronto in February one time, had my winter jacket and winter boots and gloves and hats and scarves. I thought I was so prepared but I could feel the chill seeping into my bones and everyone thought I must have been from Florida because I could just not warm up.

But the ocean regulates our temperatures, so it's never *too* hot in the summer (though lately it can get up to 30 degrees or so), and the winter never gets too cold (though we do get a fair bit of snow). If it ever got -20 here (without windchill, I guess, cause it's always windy) I wouldn't even consider going outside!

The farthest west I've ever been is Toronto. :p
