I would consider this a "survival mechanism" or at least a function that contributes to the body's well-being. It's certainly not purposeless in any biological function.
but it is unnecessary when concerned with emotional responses it's almost as if the mind feels as though it was poked in the eye, so to speak and the body responds in kind
