The whole CO theater shooting

Jul 25, 2012 10:45

In every post on FB or here I see about the theater shooting, I'm seeing a lot of opinions expressed. In all of those, they start with "I think" and then follow up with "guns in the hands of innocent victims would've made things worse." They base this opinion on, I believe, a long life of watching the news, movies, and TV. I suspect none of those ( Read more... )

Agreed. Too bad this sort of informed, considered analysis will have zero impact on those who feel (not think) this is an epidemic and gov must Do Something.

I'd like for you to have that same option yourself. You may not choose to exert that option, and that is your choice. But even if you don't want to make that choice, don't try to exert your personal bias onto others.

That, right there, is the same argument pro-choice folks make, and it's frustrating as fuck to have the giant, amorphous hand of "but you're dangerous and immoral" waved in one's face.

Let us not conflate the two issues, they aren't the same. They may have similarities, I will certainly grant that. That said, I am exceptionally libertarian, and wish for the government to stay the fuck out of our houses/bedrooms/bodies/etc.

I'm not trying to, I'm just pointing to the rhetorical similarity; I agree with you on all points even without you having the ability to shoot and kick my ass. :-)

While I personally am libertarian and pro-choice, I keep these two issues separate because one is an enumerated right under the Constitution and an historically acknowledged natural right and the other is not.
Also, see the article, "Outrage is not an Argument" on Reason.com.

Well said. Predictably, I agree entirely.

I've heard conflicting reports on whether he had kevlar, or a tactical vest (meaning black with pockets) - I'm inclined to think it was the latter, based on a receipt CNN dug up. Much of the media seems to think "ballistic nylon" means bulletproof.

I have opined similar in other places, and every time I get the "If you start shooting at the bad guy and he shoots back at you, you are now placing the people around you into the line of danger."

The opposing parties never comprehended that even if I didn't shoot back, the bad guy is already shooting the people around me. When pointed out, the best I could get was in essence "well if he was shooting at the other half of the theater he's now shooting at your half."

First: What happened in Aurora is a goddamn horror, and there is no excuse nor reason for anyone to enter a crowded room full of strangers and open fire, killing a bunch of people for no reason. On this, I think we can all agree ( ... )
