Title: We start and end as a family
Summary: Jonghyun and Key wants to adopt a child but don’t have the confidence to. So Taemin and Minho “loans” them their child for the day and let them experience the feeling of being parents. So Jonghyun and Key become parents for day. They experience what was it like to have a child and to have a family.
“Minki, be good for Jonghyun and Key appa okay?”
“Yes Minho appa”
“Good. Then we’ll be off now” It’s 9am in the morning and Taemin and Minho dropped their 7-year old child, Choi Minki over at our house. The 2 lovebirds wanted to go on a date and wanted us, Jonghyun and I to experience how it like is to be parents.
“Bye guys”
“Bye, we’ll be back not so early”
“Yes, enjoy your time together. You can even come and pick Minki up tomorrow morning”
“No hyung, don’t even think about it. Minki has school. Remember to put him to sl-YAH!”
“Let’s go Taemin, they know what to do… BYE!”
“Enjoy!”
Now, in the house, there’s only Jonghyun, Minki and me, Kim Kibum. What do we do next?
“Minki, what do you want to do?”
“Jonghyun appa, let’s go to the zoo!”
“The zoo?”
“MM! Taemin and Minho appa are always too busy to bring me to the zoo” The zoo? That’s not a bad idea. Sounds pretty fun too.
“Okay Minki, let’s go to the zoo!” Minki jumped up from the sofa after hearing our decision. He must be pretty excited. Minki, his name really fits his bright personality.
“Okay, but first let’s pack lunch okay?”
“Minki wants to help!”
“Everyone’s gonna help. Let’s go wash our hands!” Jonghyun carried Minki to the sink and washes his hands. I went over to the refrigerator and took our ingredients for the sandwich. Cheese, lettuce, tomato and ham. The very first step for our parental experience is involving the kid in whatever we’re doing. I looked over at Jonghyun and Minki. They were splashing water at each other, looking like a real father and son.
“Stop playing boys, come over!” Minki sat on top of Jonghyun’s shoulders, waving his arms in the air. He must be really excited to go the zoo. After half an hour, we finally finished the sandwich and packed our bags to get ready for the trip to the zoo. We got into the car and we’re ready to go!
The journey to the zoo takes about an hour and a half. Seeing Minki sleeping soundly in the backseat reminds me of why he was here in the first place.
FLASHBACK
“Jonghyun, shall we adopt a child?” Jonghyun spat out the coffee that he was drinking on to the newspaper he was reading (Imagine that. LOL! )
“WHAT?”
“Adopt a child. A-D-O-P-T. Adopt.”
“Why the sudden decision?”
“Well, look at Minho, Taemin and Minki. They look so happy and completed being together”
“Uhh, we’re completed too”
“No, not without a child”
“But…we never have a child before”
“True…AH! I got it.” I ran over to the phone and punched in Taemin’s number.
“Hello?”
“Ah, TAE!”
“Kibum hyung, what’s up” I told him about the whole adopting a child and having no confidence issue and asked him for his opinion.
“Why not this way hyung. On Thursday, Minho and I was planning to head out to have a little time of our own, but you know with Minki here, it’s kinda hard so why not you and Jonghyun hyung help us to babysit Minki. At the same time, someone is helping us to look after Minki, you and Jonghyun hyung can experience being parents for a day and Minho and I could have a day out all to ourselves. See, killing three- birds with one stone. Agree?”
“Sometimes Taemin, I think you’re the hyung around here. Good idea! Okay then Thursday it is”
BACK TO THE PRESENT
We reached the zoo around 11.30pm. Thankfully, the zoo wasn’t crowded at all. We bought the entrance tickets and very soon, we’re inside of the zoo enjoying ourselves.
“WAH! APPA! Look at that lion! It’s huge. Can I touch it?”
“NO” Jonghyun and I said unison. It’s been awhile…
“Minki, you touch that and you’ll die” Minki face changed after hearing Jonghyun’s explanation and changed his decision on touching the lion instantly.
We trekked through different enclosures, watched animal shows and even took part in it. Minki’s smile gets wider and wider as we go.
“Kibum appa! I’m going ahead to see the Zebra!”
“Don’t run off too far! We’ll be right behind you”
“YESS!” Minki ran off at the speed of light to the zebra area. So now, it’s just Jonghyun and I. So this is how Taemin and Minho feel. Not having time to themselves and having to worry about Minki. Minki’s an orphan… His parents left him at the orphanage, putting him up for adoption. Taemin and Minho showers him with lots of love so that he won’t feel like he’s unwanted and different.
“What are you thinking of?” Jonghyun held my hand intertwined his fingers with mine.
“Just thinking of Taemin and Minho”
“What, you wanna join them on their date. Ahh, here you are with your boyfriend and there you are thinking of another couple”
“Don’t be a moron Jjong. I was just thinking of Taemin and Minho, having that feeling of protecting Minki. It really feels different having a kid huh”
“Jjong?” Jonghyun wasn’t listening to me anymore.
“What’s wrong?”
“Minki…where is he?” We’ve already reached the zebra area but Minki’s nowhere to be found. He said he would be here didn’t he so then where is he?
“MINKI!”
“MINKI, where are you.”
“Come out come out wherever you are!” No reply from Minki. Only the sounds of zebra swishing their tails around.
“Jjong, what do we do now?”
“Find him! What else can we do?”
“How? I don’t even know where is he”
“It’s all your fault”
“My fault!?”
“If you hadn’t let him run off by himself this wouldn’t have happened.”
“Hello mister, Minki’s your responsibility too you know.”
“You’re the one who asked for it, not me”
“Kim Jonghyun! You’re the BEST at pushing the blame onto others!”
“You were at fault to begin with. I have no blame to push around.”
“How ca-”
DING DONG DANG
“We’re sorry to interrupt you visitors, but parents of Choi Minki, please come down to the reception counter near the tram station number 2. Thank you very much”
DING DONG DANG
We ran to the reception counter over at tram station number 2. We saw Minki standing there with one of the zoo staff( Zoo staff? Zoo keeper?). He wasn’t crying, he wasn’t throwing a tantrum. He was just calm and standing there waving at us.
“AHH! Choi MINKI!”
“Jonghyun appa. Kibum appa”
“Where did you go Minki! You had us worried sick there”
“Sorry. I was following this pretty peacock wandering around and I didn’t know where to go, so I decided to call you”
“You had us worried Minki, don’t do that ever again!”
“How will we answer to your appa if anything happens to you?”
“But appa, I’m fine aren’t I?” We were having mixed emotions at that time. Angry and relief.
“Sorry appa, I won’t do that anymore.”
“You promise?”
“Promise. Can we have lunch now? Minki’s hungry” Jonghyun and I laughed at Minki’s question but stopped after exchanging glances at each other. I remembered the little quarrel we had when Minki went missing. During lunch, I was either talking to Minki or Jonghyun’s talking to Minki OR Minki talking to himself and the both of us just laughing at whatever he’s saying. I never exchange a word with Jonghyun after that. I was mad at him for pushing the blame to me when Minki went missing.
It was still early when we reached home from the zoo. It was around 5.30pm. I started preparing dinner as Jonghyun and Kinki were taking a bath together.
“CHOI MINKI!” I heard Jonghyun shout from upstairs and I can also hear Minki giggling loudly.
“You’ll catch a cold Minki. Hurry!”
“Appa, catch me catch me!” Running noises could be heard. Probably Jonghyun chasing after Minki to make him wear his clothes.
They chased each other for about 20 minutes or so when Minki finally gave in to Jonghyun and both came down with red faces for dinner.
Taemin and Minho should be back about anytime now. Minki was our bedroom, watching SpongeBob Squarepants. I didn’t know where Jonghyun is and I’m at the balcony, hanging the laundry. Suddenly, this warm pair of arms wrapped around me from the back. I know very well who’s arms they belong to.
“Hey”
“Go away”
“You’re still angry?”
“No”
“Come on, don’t be so petty…”
“Petty?” I removed his arms and turn around to face him.
“If you’re in my shoes, let’s see whether you’ll be angry or not”
“Okay chill. I acted like a total bastard there just now and I’m sorry. Don’t ignore. It’s antagonising.” His puppy eyes shone under the lights and it was way too cute for me to ignore such face like that. I pinched his cheeks and turn his face from side to side.
“Aigoo, so cute. How could I stay mad at such cute face like that”
“So I’m forgiven?”
“You think?”
“I love you” He gave me a quick peck on the lips and I shoo him away after that. I have to hurry hang the laundry and check on Minki.
Jonghyun and I went up and find a Minki sleeping on the bed.
“He’s sleeping”
“Yeah, he’s cute isn’t it?”
“Totally…All babies are cute Jjong”
“Yeah but not as cute as you”
“Cheesy…but I like it”
“Kekeke!”
DING DONG.
“That must be them. I’ll go open the door”
I hurried down to open the door for the real appas that came to pick their beloved son up.
“Hey how did it go?”
“Pretty awesome”
“Really? That’s good. So what’s your decision?”
“I don’t know. I have yet to discuss it with Jonghyun yet”
“Ooh, tell me you have decided. Where’s our son?”
“Sleeping…in the room.” Minho went up to the room and carried the sleeping Minki back. They didn’t stay for long. They had to put Minki to bed. Such great parents…
“So, what’s your decision?” It was late at night when Jonghyun and I are already getiing all comfortable on our bed getting ready to sleep.
“I don’t know… What if we don’t make good parents?”
“Nah, we will. Don’t worry”
“You think?”
“I’ll be here won’t I?”
“True…”
“So I’ll take that as a yes?”
“What about you?”
“I’ll go along with whatever decision you make. Cause whatever decision you make, will definitely be a wise one.”
“Aww, that’s sweet Jjong.”
“Of course… Now let’s sleep okay? We’ll go down to the adoption centre tomorrow”
“Really?”
“Yup…”
“I love you Jonghyun. So very much… You know I feel like I’m ready…Because I know, you’ll always be there for me, and helping me out.”
“Definitely”
So I guess, our little family begins tomorrow. We’ll start as a family and end as one…
“YAH! KIM EUNJUNG!”
