2011 Brownlow Blue Carpet

Sep 26, 2011 23:06

Every year I'm afraid that the footy WAGs will all have good designers and truthful friends, which would ruin my fashion reporting (the only important consideration, of course :-> ), but luckily there was still a lot of bad taste on display.

Hit the Post

Almost but not quite…

Less would have been more for Joanne Brady: I like the sheer bodice/sleeve combination but I think it would have worked much better with a simpler gown without the folds and glitter. Still, nice construction and she looks good in it.

Amy Burgoyne in flattering blue -- this actually might have worked had they left off the bizarre line of jewelled medallions and the pockets.

Terrific color and style for Kerry Lavell but why add a target at the waist?

Not sure Cath Heard could have found a worse colour, although the dress itself is fine.

Lauren Phillips in futuristic asymmetric stretchy chain mail that does not at all flatter her figure, especially with the break at her hip. Plus really awful hair. And why blue shoes? (Saw them on TV and they were definitely blue.)

Wish the designer for Lauren Pavlich had stuck to the design of the upper part of this dress all the way through instead of cutting it short and adding a tulle ruffle and skirt. Nice back.

Not sure what I think about this glittery armour on Erin Maxwell, although I'm pretty sure I don't like the back.

I like the colour and the sparkle on Lauren Poulter but the bodice is not flattering for a flat chest.

Also good colour on Alex Davis but I don't know why they stuck closet door handles at various points.

Foul Play

Julie Klein in a Pepto-Bismol mess: the single sheer sleeve is strange, the strip of glitter looks tacky, and the ruffled edging and pink underdress showing at the slit don't work for me.

More surprising was Rebecca Judd, who usually exhibits good design sense even when she's deliberately trying to shock. I don't get this year's ensemble at all: I don't like the row of ruffles on the front leading into a slit, or the sheer embroidered sliver shoulders, or the white shoes, or the fishtail hanging off her tush.

Ash Priddis forgot to change out of her nightgown.

Someone should have told Geraldine Sheedy that she needed to keep the next appointment for her dress fitting and not just stop at them rolling fabric around her to see how the color looked. (I'm also horribly afraid that she might not be wearing a bra under this…)

Travis Cloke and Bethany Taylor looked like the toppers on a wedding cake.

Diana Steiner in an ill-fitting pastel flamenco dress.

A moment of silence for the snake whose skin was shed for Amy Schultz.

Corey Scaffini looks like a giant bumblebee.

Taylor Wilson reflects the Miss Kitty syndrome (although she's probably never heard of Gunsmoke): corset, lace, tulle, silver, train -- how much more can this poor dress take?

Confused by Renee Costa: I thought the band for lap band surgery went on the inside. Also, shoulder pads are worn in American football, not footy.

Georgia Homer looks like a sexed-up satyr.

Brooke Robinson in a jewelled bodice and a cling wrap skirt whose butterflies are trapped in the back but apparently managed to eat the front away.

Alisha Scotland wearing her kitchen curtains.

Rayne Embley in a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

Worst of the Night: Anna Green in a peekaboo red mess.

I'm sure you'll be shocked that Brynne Edelstein is not Skank of the Night -- her outfit is slightly more demure than usual (which is probably the first time that the word "demure" has ever been used in the same sentence as her name), and actually had some style to it, tacky thought it might be.

Skank of the Night goes to Renae Wauhop in folded silver foil showing more skin than dress.

Full Points

Lauren Hodge manages to look classy in stripes, not an easy thing to do.

I like the overall look on Nicole Dodds: simple, feminine dress that flatters her figure with just a little edging of bling and she obviously got her hair done for the occasion.

Similar and equally flattering look of an interesting bodice and flowing chiffon on Jessica McDonald.

Despite her religious restrictions on dress, Rouba Houli looks a lot more glamourous than women who had a freer hand.

This gown on Symone Demetriou actually looked better on TV than here - the collar really sparkled and the fit is good.

Really nice colour on Brooke Kennedy, and for a change the corset top works with a flowing skirt.

Felicity Harvey in one of the few dresses where I think the slit actually works, echoing the simple V of the cleavage.

Kylie Brown in a well-fitted black-lace-and gold sheath. (Wish she'd done something other than the Veronica Lake look for her hair.)

Slinky silver on Belinda Riverso with an interesting back.

Tania Buckley in dramatic black with gold embroidered keyhole.

Rebecca Skilton glitters in well-fitting silver.

Best of the Night: Nadia Coppolino in a flattering shade of green and a great fit.
