Due to the fact that the awards cover both TV and film, the Golden Globes are one of the more populated awards of the year so this report is concomitantly long as well.
Tugging on Capes
More proof that unless you’re a superhero, you should mostly avoid capes (not entirely sure why all of a sudden they’re a thing).
Cate Blanchett in faded pink and fringe, looking like an old-fashioned lampshade. Even weirder from the
back.
A little too much going on for
Jada Pinkett, especially in the
back, but a great color for her.
This is awful on
Jennifer Lopez: strange catwoman cape, harsh color, hair highlights that don’t complement her skin tone, and makeup that ages her. Only good things are the diamond accent necklace and that, for a change, the twins aren’t pushed in anyone’s face.
I really like the floral bling on
Regina King (I learned tonight that these large spangles are called "paillettes"!) but then she had to go and ruin the look with the
floaty rear cape that appears to
erupt from the back of her neck. Otherwise, though, nice fit and great shoes.
A confused Gothic horror on
Emilia Clarke: tuxedo
shirt-front bodice and a dark illusion beaded cape and ill-fitting skirt.
This trend was taken to ridiculous Batman-like extremes by
Olivia Palermo at an after-party (and even sillier from the
back).
Taking the Plunge
There were even more plunged-down-to-here necklines this year than usual - personally, I prefer a little less pasty skin on display on top. I really hope we won’t be getting high on the fumes of boob glue throughout the awards season.
At least
Jaime Alexander has the figure to wear a
cut-down-to-here dress and the fabulous patterned material is a good color for her. Great earrings too.
Tasteful black bondage on
Kirsten Dunst and in
back, and at least she has boobs to make the view more interesting.
The graduated large-pattern beading on
Jenna Dewann Tatum is interesting but I would have liked a slimmer
skirt.
Beads and Bling
Stunning beadwork and bead design on
Kate Bosworth but I think it’s too busy to actually wear.
Jane Wu in perfectly fitted and polished silver patterns.
Although I’m not hugely fond of cut-out midriffs, this one on
Brie Larson is relatively inoffensive. However, due to her
bad posture, I think it would have looked better if the collar for the halter had been higher. Not sure why you'd wear
earrings made of a thin strand of white diamonds with a shiny gold dress...
Julianne Moore in well-fitted blingy blue.
Gorgeous mermaid colors and a mermaid look for
Carly Chaikin.
Possibly Eligible for Reconditioning
Love the embroidery on Miss Golden Globes, Jamie Foxx's daughter
Corinne Foxx, but the style is too old for her and the waist doesn't seem to fit.
Can’t really put this pedestrian number on
Amy Schumer in the Best category but it’s by far the best I’ve seen her look
My favorite part of this look on
Jennifer Lawrence is the fabulous
jeweled collar - the gap at the bodice reminds me of a Colorforms toy set.
Great color on
Rachel Bloom but I don't love the horizontal bodice pleat and the rest of the gown makes her look hippy. The bodice also didn't keep the twins in check: they were bouncing all around when she went on stage when they announced she won. Great purse, though!
Sorry,
Alicia Vikander - The world was really not waiting for a
side-boob pinafore. (I do like the flow of the
skirt, though.)
Nice to see
Melissa McCarthy looking young and not dowdy and having lost some weight, even if it does mean she is wearing a shiny blue rain slicker.
Good color, fit, and interesting material on
Olivia Wilde: when I first saw the shot of her getting out of a car, I actually thought this was leather! (Picky, picky, picky, I know, but much as I always advocate a
necklace, it should (a) work with the neckline and not clunkily smash over it, and (b) the stones should either match or complement the color of your outfit and not be a disconcerting shade off.)
The Washouts
Eva Green,
Saoirse Ronan, and
Savannah Guthrie fade away.
Modern torture: Not only does the weird wide choker look likes it’s choking a washed-out
Kate Hudson, the bandeau is squashing her boobs, and the skirt kept slipping so she kept hiking it up. (I don’t think the material was particularly flattering to her
booty either.)
The Guys
I wonder which Rat Pack member’s closet
Dwayne Johnson raided?
The pattern on
Eddie Redmayne’s ill-fitting jacket is
bees!
Le Sigh:
Bryan Cranston looks classy in all black.
Had to give a shout-out to
David Oyelowo in a purple patterned suit with matching vest that somehow works on him!
Rejects
Would not have previously believed it was possible to make
Eva Langoria look dowdy: Why would any designer put the only color accent on the hips, even such skinny hips as hers, not to mention the clunky beading along the schoolgirl-like collar? Plus, why would you put a train on a white dress that has to trail through that environment? (Same train comment for
Laverne Cox.)
Olivia Palermo in a 1960s op-art bedspread with a mismatched necklace.
Let me count the ways: bad color, blobby bodice, and strange necklace on
Leslie Mann.
Caitriona Balfe in Morticia Addams’s nightgown
Zendaya in a dull-red-lace tiered toilet roll holder that overwhelms her slender figure. (I’ve been surprised how many times I’ve seen this on Best of the Night lists.) I don’t think it’s any better from the
back either.
Heidi Klum has found and slaughtered Bigfoot for its fur!
Jane Fonda looks like she forgot that the tutu was supposed to go around her waist and not her neck. Still, look at that face and hair and makeup at age 78! (I heroically refrained from taking credit for Jezebel’s description that it was a tribute to traditional Mexican roof tiles.)
Lola Kirke in a too-large twisted bright-yellow bedsheet.
Good for
Bryce Howard for buying her dress off-the-rack at Nieman's but she probably should have brought her stylist with her: Although blue is definitely a good color for redheads, the dark beading on shiny electric blue ages her, the
lace inset seems odd with the heavy look of the beading, it doesn’t fit well at the waist, and the sleeves are a very awkward length. (And why would you wear
earrings of two different colors of orange? They don't really complement her hair if that was the aim...) Great makeup, though.
Katy Perry in a schizophrenic look: She needs to decide whether she’s going for a young fresh look in unembellished pink with a
jaunty bow in the back or a sultry trampy look in her hair and makeup, but not both. (However, had to give her credit in the red carpet interview: "They asked me to present so I dug out my wig and [points to chest] my globes")
Rachel McAdams in embossed flowers and the worst fit of the night; definitely didn’t call for a
train.
This two-tone frumpy gown on
Maura Tierney wouldn’t work even for a class reunion, let alone at the Golden Globes. (And did she forget she wiped off her lipstick in the taxi?)
Why, why, why does
Maggie Gyllenhaal do this? This year, it’s a yellow-and-black horror that looks like something your tasteless Aunt Bertha would wear to her nephew’s bar mitzvah, plus she has a tarantula crawling up her shoulder.
Tying for Most Shredded, Most Nude, and Worst of the Night are
Rooney Mara (even more shredded in the
back) and
Amanda Peet.
Seal of Approval
Classy style and great color and fit on
Gina Rodriguez, although the skirt is a little wide for her. This is crying out for a Harry Winston sapphire necklace (and matching earrings - why, why, why emeralds in the
earrings?)
Thanks to her tan and the shades in the dress, I think this light color works on
Lily James, as does the interestingly twisted bodice.
Soothing balanced geometry and a great color on
Natalie Dormer.
Queen Latifah looking fab in well-fitted turquoise and great earrings. (However, she needed better foundation garments: I should not be able to tell where her navel is!)
Sophia Bush in basic black with a flattering high-cut bodice for a smaller bust, plus - finally! - an accent diamond
necklace Kate Winslet in flattering eye-catching blue.
Lady Gaga looking glamorous while successfully channeling Marilyn Monroe. (Not sure how she can breathe in that corset!)
Love this on
America Ferrera: bright-but-not-too-bright yellow and a very flattering style for her.
I should really hate this on
Sarah Hay: it has several elements I usually dislike - nude base material, chopped chiffon - but somehow I think it works on her.
Necklace of the Night goes to
Helen Mirren.
Best of the Night:
Viola Davis in an unusual and stunning representation of the night sky.
