Title: Those beautiful memories...
Rating: G
Fandom: Family Outing
Pairing/Characters: Daesung-centric
Musical Inspiration: DJ Okawari's Bluebird Story
Word Count: 1406
Summary: Daesung sometimes thinks back on his Family Outing days
For: for the old melodicword challenge.

Daesung doesn't dream often. But after the first filming of Family Outing, Daesung finds that all of his dreams take place in a similar setting.

Not all of the villages they visit are the same, but they have similar characteristics. And Daesung finds that, in his dreamland, every place is amalgamated into one countryside.

Over mountains and across streams, Daesung finds that all of his little secrets are housed in low lighted rooms within traditional HanOak houses.

The day has passed by quickly. The sun is almost set and the cameras have turned on their night vision setting that turns everyone into green-faced ghosts. Jaesuk is with Daesung and they're laughing about something Jaesuk has just said. He's comparing Kim Sooro's face to a carrot they've just dug out of the ground. It's a simple joke, but it's hilarious and Daesung's in a good mood as they skip along the dirt path back to the house they're staying at for the night.

They arrive to the smell of seafood stew. Yejin and Chunhee have brought back five palm-sized fish from their fishing trip and now, Jongshin hyung is supervising the whole thing.

One of the main cameras blink off right after Sooro and Chunhee come back from their short trip to the vegetable garden.

"We're going to change the tape" yells one of the cameramen.

The pressure is off for a bit, but the scene doesn't really change. All it means is that they don't have to worry about being funny, don't have to worry about their make-up or image, and they don't have to stay on set.

Daesung slips away to change his undershirt. It's nighttime, but he's been sweating since Sooro gave him the job of fanning the fire for the stew. He passes a dimly lit room on the way to his van. There are whispers and Daesung can make out the shadow of Hyori nuna's figure.

Daesung changes direction, heading toward the sound of Hyori's laugh. He grins shyly and briefly ponders on how he should tease and scold her about not being apart of the dinner crew. But something along the way stops him. The soft breathing, the very tone of her giggle is off somehow, sincere almost.

"And remember when..." a man's voice whispers.

And it's then that a light goes off in Daesung's head. His feet crawl back on their own, scraping along the dirt and moving backwards.

Jongkook hyung, Daesung thinks. And it's harder for Daesung to turn around.

When Daesung comes back to set with a fresh shirt on, Jaesuk is the first one to greet him.

"Oh, here's Daesung-ee now! Daesung-ah, let's show everyone the carrot we found. Heehee..."

And when Jaesuk starts to giggle, it's contagious. Daesung starts to laugh harder when the actual carrot is produced and is placed next to Kim Sooro's head. Daesung laughs so hard that he starts to tear up.

He tells himself that he doesn't see the way that Hyori Nuna's eyes crinkle at Kim Jongkook. He tells himself that Kim Jongkook isn't being shy, isn't slowly making his way from across the whole yard to stand next to Hyori. Daesung doesn't see the way they hold hands behind their backs, hidden from the camera's angle.

Before Daesung knows it, dinner's over and it's time to choose the sleeping arrangements.

"The place next to the clock is the best" says Jaesuk. "Away from the door, less mosquitoes."

"Then that'll be where the girls sleep" Yejin says with a nasally laugh.

Hyori readily agrees and Jaesuk sighs.

"Looks like I'll be sixth again...which means..."

Jaesuk looks to Jongshin hyung and everyone starts laughing.

Daesung tries to become oblivious. After all, he's one half of "Dumb and Dumber"; he's not supposed to catch these things. But there's the way Hyori blatantly teases everyone with a sexy dance and there's the way Hyori stays physically away from Jongkook, all the while eyeing him with a sultry look. There's also the way Jongkook tries harder than before to gain a higher ranking and there's the way Jongkook smiles towards Yejin, but really, just towards the girls in particular.

Everyone teases.

Oh look, after filming a music video with Yejin, Jongkook's become partial to one person! is what they say.

But unfortunately, Daesung knows better. And when the times comes for the girls to choose, Daesung finds himself wishing more fervently than he's ever wished before. Hyori's been chosen as last place among the two girls. This means she'll be sleeping next to a guy.

Please let it be me. Let it be me.

And it is Daesung in the end. But when the lights go off and the cameras stop whirring, a hand reaches across his chest and brushes against another's.

"Rise and shine" someone says.

Daesung is ready to play any kind of inane game the staff has got set up for them. He's more than groggy because he's tried all night to keep the furious beating of his chest hidden from those sleeping next to him.

Second place Jongkook hyung and second place Lee Hyori. In spite of himself, Daesung finds that he feels the need to sneak around and catch them in the act. He decides, even before he opens his eyes, that there will be no hanky-panky on his watch; he's got just a little more than 'just a crush' , but then again, so does Hyori.

"Daesung-ah. Daesung-ah" someone calls.

And Daesung expects Jaesuk hyung's voice. He's always the first to wake up. But he remembers something. His eyes fly open. No siren. No megaphone. And --

"Daesung. Hurry up and get dressed. Time to go to the shop."

It's his manager. His actual Big Bang manager. And, of course, he means the hair and make-up shop.

"What about...breakfast duty...?" Daesung blurts out. Sleepiness makes him less careful with his words and thoughts. So, even as Daesung processes that it had all been a dream, the question presents itself.

The manager laughs.

"What, you think you're still on Family Outing or something?"

There's no malice in the joke (even though it stings a little) and his manager gently claps him on the shoulder.

"Get dressed" his manager says softly before walking out of Daesung's room.

Instead of feeling relieved or heartbroken or even embarrassed, all Daesung feels is this hollow chill inside his left chest. There had been days of freedom then (thought even that freedom had been limited). There had been days where sticky sweat had not been the only thing that was sticky. The sickly sweet feeling of a one-sided crush. The warmth of eight, sleeping in one room, even on the coldest of winter days.

He sighs and rubs the sleep out of his eyes. There had been those days and now, it was his turn to find something for the future.

"Family..." Daesung whispers, looking at his reflection after brushing his teeth.

"Daesung-ah" Hyori says.

Her voice is kind of soft, considering the hustle and bustle of the waiting room. But Daesung hears it anyway. It's kind of rare to see Hyori smiling like she is. Soft, and somehow more sincere than usual.

"How have you been Nuna?" Daesung asks her.

Hyori's hand finds Daesung and her fingers pull on Daesung's wrist.

"Good. Good. You look good too."

They're forced to talk in closer proximity than normal people would have had to talk. The inside of the waiting room is loud and crowded. But they're used to this. Even so, Daesung's heart rate quickens.

"Thanks" Daesung replies. "You too Nuna. You too."

There's nothing really special about the content of the exchange. Daesung will remember their words later that night and be surprised at how insignificant their conversation really was. But there's an energy that jolts between them. Warmth and a little bit of yearning too.

"See you around" Hyori says because she's being called to rehearsal and she's busy.

"Yeah" is all Daesung replies because, well, he's busy too.

As Hyori slips out of the room, she makes a phone signal with her free hand.

Call me.

Daesung nods with a smile.

He won't call for a long time afterward. And when he finally does, he will find that he no longer feels the shortness of breath, no longer feels the rapid beating of his heart. And he'll smile (finally, without holding back) because all he will remember are those beautiful memories.

big bang, mildtigers, daesung
