Populism isn't a good governance system; it's fundamentally unsustainable. But countries become vulnerable to it when discourse is out of touch -- eradication of local language and culture, extension of consumerist values, plus the global 'center' economies pushed a lot of debt on the developing world leading to dependency and crisis. These things discredit institutions and atomize citizens.

I have no idea what the solution is.

On a global level, I would barely know where to begin. In the UK, there is a mishmash of issues, among them the troubles caused by austerity. People forget that once upon a time the same resentment currently pointed at foreigners in the job market was once pointed at women for exactly the same thing. Then there is the endless cant of a by and large vicious and mendacious press, endlessly regurgitating propaganda which has become a substitute for historical fact and built into the country a fantasy of inevitably winning in wars, David always slaughters Goliath and God is an Englishman...

There is so much more. It wearies me even to try to catalogue it.
