Weekend Update

So I had fun this weekend.

On Friday, I saw Stellastarr* at the Rock and Roll Hotel. kusoyaro got there way too early and was entertained by a _way_-lookalike named Andy. Not-me Andy was very enthusiastic and apparently had come in from Virginia Beach to see the show. He was also infatuated by the lead singer of the first opening band, The Postmarks who was rocking a Cleopatra-cut hairstyle. I really really wanted to brush her bangs aside and see if she had eyebrows because her bangs were almost past her eyelashes. The band itself was okay. Nothing really special or standard and just generically catchy. The singer sort of sounded Emily Haines-like during certain songs but there really wasn't anything of note to their performance.

The next band up was the Wild Lights out of New Hampshire. The drummer always stayed the same, but the other three guys rotated every song or two between singing/playing guitar, just playing guitar, and playing bass. Pretty much their entire performance was better than any of the Postmarks songs. Of course, the frontman that I liked the most only played two songs, but the other two guys weren't bad either.

Stellastarr played a decent set. Their drummer was manning the merchandise table so I bought their new CD there. I had only listened to Freak Out and Prom Zombie which I had found on a random site that had interviewed Stellastarr but I'd say that more than half of their set was from prior albums. They played In the Walls, Jenny, My Coco, No Weather, Sweet Troubled Soul, Moongirl...I think that was it in terms of old stuff.

Afterwards, I went back to Hsien's place and got lost in SE along the way because I missed the exit for 295. Good times.

On Saturday, we filmed a little short clip and watched (500) Days of Summer. That was the reason for staying over at Hsien's the night before because I like to sleep in on weekends and I figured it'd be easier than waking up a couple hours earlier to get to Hsien's place the next morning. The final product was about a minute long and basically involves me berating a vacuum cleaner for not turning on when I pushed the button. It was mainly to test the sound equipment that I had gotten and to see how hard it would be to synchronize audio that wasn't recorded on the same device as the camera. It turns out it's not that hard as long as the clapboard/clapping hands are on-screen. So at least we have a viable portable recording setup now.

We saw 500 Days of Summer at the Landmark Theater in Bethesda. I've been really tired of the completely predictable and formulaic crap that Hollywood churns out and calls romantic comedies lately (hello there, The Proposal!), so this one was a bit more refreshing. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of my favorite actors of recent years and Zooey Deschanel is just...something about the blue eyes and the dark hair just really get me going. Ben Gibbard is a lucky guy. Anyway, the movie was really good. Hsien had read somewhere that it was really depressing, but after the movie we both agreed that whoever wrote that is stupid and that we are brainiacs. Summer was a weird amalgamation of 3-4 ex-girlfriends and I swear that some of the scenes and lines from the movie were ripped directly from my life. The film was told completely from a guy's perspective, but it's a situation that I think most girls can relate to. I highly recommend watching it if you like romantic comedies or have ever thought you were in love.

After the movie, we were going to eat at that french steakhouse that is on the corner past the movie theater, but the line was out the door yet again. Popular place. We've had drinks in there, but I'm not sure we'll ever eat there unless we wait there till they open for dinner service or something. We ate at the Austin Grill instead. I think both Hsien and I had tacos. They were delicious, but I don't see where the Austin influence comes from. They were also not burritos, which was fine. I did not want to eat burritos this weekend.

Sunday was a day of rest. Rest meaning I leveled my orc shaman from level 72 to 74.

weekends, concerts, movies
