Key dragged his feet down the stairs of his house before throwing himself against a chair. He slumped lazily into the hard cold furniture waiting for his mum to get breakfast ready.
" Do you really need to dress like that every day "
The young boy looked at her , eyeing her up and down. " Yes I do so I don't look like you , MUM i told you not to wear that it doesn't flatter you at all "
His mother looked at him disapprovingly with hints of worry. " I don't care no one's going to want to look at me anyway "
She walked over an placed his breakfast in front of him.
" Well I care , people will look at me and… ugh give me a second " pushing his chair back roughly he ran up the stairs disappearing into the corner of the corridor.
" MUM WHERE'S THAT TOP I BOUGHT FOR YOU LAST WEEK "
" Somewhere in the closet , don't think i took it out of the bag " his mother's weak reply came as she heard him already running down the steps as soon as she finished.
" Here , just change into this alright, I want my mother to look as good as her son " he handed her the garment and gave her a quick kiss on her cheek before shoving down the breakfast and running out the front door.
The temperature outside was low and slightly breezy. Key pulled his hood lower over his head and dipped his hands into the pockets of his jacket. These were the times he regretted withdrawing from the morning bus rides, but school was pretty nearby and it would help the mother and son save some money regardless of the amount.
Anyway he hated being in the bus with a bunch of stupid people who always just stared at him as if he was some display at the museum.

School was a something Key did because he had too. It did not mean he was failing miserably and scraping through in fact he was doing above average occasionally topping the class for some random subject. He always felt it was luck , he never really bothered because soon enough he would run away from this shithole of neighborhood with his mother and they would live better lives somewhere else.
That was until a certain dorky transfer student walked into his classroom that day. After introducing himself , never failing to mention his addiction a certain poultry , the transfer student sat himself down next to Key and smiled with this goofy grin, that even a week later is still stuck , very much rooted deeply into Key's brain.
Jinki. His name was Lee Jinki
He was 2 years older than Key , but for some reason he missed school for a year and a half and was held back.
" Do you ever stop smiling ? " Jinki looked at Key curiously.
" I don't think so, sometimes maybe , why? "
" Its weirdly infectious and annoying at the same time , how can you always be so happy "
" But I am happy , there so many things to be happy about , school, family , friends, classmates like you , come on Key aren't you happy too ? "
" No . " he simply finished ending the conversation abruptly just in time for the final bell to ring and he strolled out of class.

Jinki sat by himself in the library that afternoon, hurriedly flipping through books and taking down what ever seem relevant to his homework. Yet somehow he wasn't as engrossed as he usually was. His mind always running off to a boy with the sad smile.
Why isn't he happy , Jinki thought to himself. Telling himself he was ahead of his assignment anyway he pushed his books aside giving in to the boy who derailed his train of thoughts.
I shall make him happy.
He flipped to a new sheet of paper on his notepad and started jotting down things that made people happy.
THINGS THAT MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY BY LEE JINKI
Flowers
Chocolates
Hugs.
Smiles
Smiles made people happy too , but somehow Key wasn't very fond of his.
Smiles
Paper hearts
Songs
Jinki could sing , really well in fact so he made a mental note to record something for him.
The list went on until it took up the entire page only then was Jinki truly satisfied with himself. He began to arrange the books on the table and placed everything carefully into his backpack only to stand up and realized the sky outside was pitch black.
He was late for dinner, and his mum would be freaking out already.
" Oh no " he muttered be for dashing out the library doors ignoring the librarians screams of how it was pure defiance these days when kids treat the library like a play ground.

The next few days , Key didn't show up in school. His desk-mate was worried and anxious. Jinki didn't have Key's number so he couldn't call to see if something happen , all he could do was sit in school and wait him to turn up.
Soon hopefully.
It turn out to take an entire week before Key decided to glide into class. It was a Tuesday.
" I was sick " he said when Jinki questioned him endlessly.
" Oh." was the only reply he managed before puling out a HUGE sunflower and shoved it into Key's hand.
" This is for you , i bought it yesterday , but you didn't come so it looks a bit brownish, sorry "
Key held it , face full of shock and slightly embarrassed from all the looks his classmates were giving. Pointing and nudging each other as though he was oblivious to it.
" Its not my birthday so ….. "
" You said you weren't happy , I made a list of things that made people happy , this is one of them , are you happy ? "
" What ? So this is not the end of it ? "
" No…"
" Erm, thankyou i guess, but really one sunflower to make my life look brighter is really pushing it. " came Key's insensitive reply. He notice it immediately when Jinki lowered his head in shame at his comment.
" hey , but its beautiful alright " he finished giving Jinki's hand a squeeze.
The older boy smiled.

As the days went by , Key secretly looked forward to school ready to be amazed by what Jinki had in stored.
Sweets , Chocolates, presents and more presents.
" So whats for today " Key asked as he sat his back down and pulled out his textbook.
" Today I …. "
Key looked at the boy hesitantly waiting for him to pull something out of his mary-poppin like bag ( he seemed to have everything in there ).
Instead Jinki reached out his hands and pulled Key into a tight hug.
"This is today's present a nice hug. " he muttered still in the embrace.
Key stiffened in the hug but slowly got use to close proximity of him. It was warm , and different not like the awkward hugs his mum gave him , of those his friends ( he had some ) gave him to thank him or wish him happy birthday. It was nice, Jinki was slightly taller and broader then him so it felt safe , like a nice comfy wall. But he would never admit to any soul out there that he enjoyed the hug.
" Okay" was the only reply Key managed before Jinki pulled away
Jinki wasn't sure if his eyes played tricks on him, or maybe the lights in the classroom caused a funny glare in his eye making him see things.
Cause he swore that day when he hugged Key , the sad boy was smiling, genuinely, beautifully , perfectly.
