The final boss wasn't Robotnik, ratface, you got rings for Robotnik. It was Metal Sonic you didn't get rings for. He came afterwards.

The final level is Metal Sonic and then Giant Robotnik where he stomps you and you die. I'm trying to find evidence from the internets, but I have to go back to work now. So I'm probably wrong and you're probably right. But I'll check later.

Giant Robotnik, then Metal Sonic. I could swear it was that way around.
