Me again. I need some advice

Jun 13, 2005 23:08

So, after I wrote yesterday's journal entry I felt kind of brave and went searching on a couple of my old bookmarks I had saved. I found something that... I need some opinions on. It's a job opening that really interests me. And yes, it's with Viz again. For those of you that know, Viz is the same place that turned me down for that editing ( Read more... )

I really, really think that no matter what has happened in previous experiences, that it is always worth a try. There's always going to be the possibility, and I really think you are capable. :) Your experience with manga/anime editing is very useful, though yes, just need to be careful about that..I'm not too sure how you would "cover it" (I'm going to have the same problem when I need to mention "ROM Hacking", because even "reverse engineering" might get the same bashing). The job seems really fitting for you, and if it's something you would absolutely love to do, I think it's worth the try. Try not to stress too much about it, it may be a lot of work to get into this, but in the end it would be worth it if you got it right ( ... )

I say give it a go, you have less of a chance if you don't.
But it's your choice more or less.

The reason why fansubbing is looked down upon in the industry is because:
1) leakage
2) illegal
3) creates a competition
4) they lose money because of them
5) a few more, I know I'm missing on

you can say you've had experience, from reading the said books helped colleagues by proof-reading their work and such.
you'll need to talk to the people at "UC Davis guidebook" and see if they can mention you for your aid and stuff, because otherwise the interviewer won't believe you.

You can talk to some people to be your reference, like your course supervisor or someone who's been in touch with you recently.

I hope it goes well for you either way, I'm going shopping tomorrow to look for a cool postcard to send, hopefully it'll make it when you get back :D?

I say go for it. "Who dares, wins."

As for the fansubbing, why not just say that one of your hobbies is translating rough Japanese into English? This way, fansubbing isn't mentioned at all, and you get the point across that you know your stuff.

Well put. I second that.

Also, companies will likely forget anything from before. They have so many people that work for them, apply, come and go. Too much to track.

And good luck!

What he said. Is there any of it that isn't in any way illegal? I don't really understand this licensing thing, but if there is anything that isn't illegal, perhaps you could take it along? I don't know.

Certainly don't worry about the lack of three years "official" work in that area, your Dad's right. As is Flamer and everyone else commenting here.

Go for it!

Well, unfortuntely the entire thing is generally seen as illegal, but it's a big tangle, really. Some of it is illegal, some of it isn't. People have different opinions, it isn't black/white. See, us translating it, editing it, making our own scripts... that's not illegal in itself. What's the closest to illegal is when we reenocde the episode and release it publicly. Now, that in itself is a tangle, because we ONLY release shows that are not legally owned in the United States. Seeing that we are based in the US, technically we are merely offering american anime fans a FREE way in which to enjoy these Japanese-only shows until they are liscened in the US and thus distributed normally, which is when we stop fansubbing the show entirely. When one looks at it that way.... it doesn't seem very harmful, and in fact benefitial to the companies which liscense shows in the US, because we get people interested in these shows. Naruto is now liscensed here, and guess what, the people that buy the DVDs are the same people that watched our ( ... )

So I appplied. >.>

And yeah, I went with Nitty's advice pretty much... I worded it as nicely as possible, without any implication of subbing, encodes, releases, bleh bleh. Basically I presented it like me and the translator pass scripts back and forth, and we give them to our friends. xD That's pretty safe I think.

So bleh, I guess we'll see. o.o Thanks for the help, guys~ <3
