[ History ] :
Ema was the youngest of two children, her older sister being one Lana Skye. Their parents died in a car crash when Ema was very young leaving Lana in charge of taking care of her. This caused the two to have a very close relationship and I suppose you could say that the two depended on each other to a certain extent. Lana pursued a career as a detective and this is where Ema’s interest in forensics grew; she was determined to one day work alongside her sister helping her to solve cases.
Fast forward two years before the start of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Lana is now a detective at the prescient. It was a fateful day really that Ema happened to be waiting around in Lana’s office for her sister’s shift to end. Turns out that a convicted serial killer Joe Darke was in for interrogation and had escaped and that was where Ema encountered him.
Prosecutor Neil Marshal ended up in the struggle to rescue Ema and ended up fighting with Darke. During this, Ema thought she saw a man going to stab another with a knife and thinking that it was Darke, Ema pushed him knocking him backwards. She passed out shortly afterwards. When she came to, she was in Lana’s arms, Neil was dead and Darke had been captured.
She was interviewed a few days after about the incident but Ema was in shock and couldn’t remember anything clearly about the incident. It was only a few days later that Ema was able to draw a picture of the scene she saw (one man looming over another to stab the other figure on the floor) on the back of a list. This was used to convict Darke later in his trial. This only furthered Ema’s goal to become a forensic investigator to help solve crimes such as these. Ema’s sister however grew cold and distant as a result of this incident.
We soon learn of Lana’s sudden personality change: she had been blackmailed by the other person who shared her split off, Damon Gant. Gant apparently had arrived at the scene first, killed Marshall and then arranged the scene of the crime so that it appeared that Ema, not Drake had killed him. When Lana entered the office she believed that she was the first on the scene and clearly saw that the evidence pointed to Ema being the killer. She begged Gant to help her arrange the crime scene and hid the evidence that pointed to Ema. Gant of course agreed to do this and as a result gained control over Lana. Ema had no clue of any of this until the case reappeared in, ‘Rise from the Ashes’.
This brings us to Ema’s encounter with Phoenix Wright. She approaches him because she was looking for Mia Fey who was an old school friend of Lana’s but instead found Phoenix. Lana had been accused of killing Bruce Goodman, the detective that had interviewed Ema during the SL-9 incident. When she learned that Mia no longer worked there, Ema requested Phoenix’s assistance in defending her sister. Lana didn’t want Ema’s involvement in the case however, but Ema was defiant and said that she would do anything for family. So she ended up accompanying Phoenix on the investigation and acts his is assistant basically. Through their investigation, the truth of the SL-9 incident comes to light and Ema’s memories of the incident also surface. They end up learning that Gant was the whole mastermind behind the case and Lana gets off with ‘not guilty’ verdict although not without a few charges against her for forging evidence. With case closed for good, Lana is able to return to her cheerful self and she apologizes for the false evidence and saying that she only did it for Ema’s sake. The two sisters make up and Ema is ultimately pleased the result because she claimed she knew that the old Lana would come back someday. Ema heads off to Europe to live with a friend of Lana’s to learn more about forensic science while Lana goes through the remainder of her trails for her other crimes.
Three years later, Ema returns to America for a vacation and ends up meeting up with Miles Edgeworth. She expressed how she had tried to meet up with him at the airport, but ended up missing him. She does however meet him at Gatewater Land while he is in the middle of an investigation and helps him analyze some footprints at the scene of the crime with her footprint analyzer. They revealed where the murder had really taken place and also the truth behind the kidnapping. She isn’t able to meet up with him again before she returns to Europe and is admittedly a bit disappointed about this.
We can now fast forward nine years to where our Snackoo-eating Ema comes into play. She returns in hopes of becoming a forensic scientist and also to meet up again with Phoenix Wright. Unfortunately, she ends up failing her aptitude test for the position and instead was hired into the criminal affairs department as a detective under the command of Klavier Gavin a prosecutor/rock god and what she calls a glimmerous fop. She turns into grumpy, irritable person not exactly pleased at her position.
When a doctor ends up being murdered, Ema is on the scene of the murder investigating when she comes face to face with two people she brushes off as annoying little kids who have no right to be there and asking her silly questions. However, when Apollo and Trucy come back to her with a peace offering of fingerprint power which she had gifted to Phoenix years ago she realizes that they really are acquainted with him and does a total 180. She begins to help them and say that if there’s anything they need she will do everything in her power to help them so that in a way, she may be able to pay back her debt that she believes she owes to Phoenix. Her continual help proves very helpful for Apollo in his future cases.
[ Personality ] :
In complete contrast to her 16 year old self, Ema Skye has turned into a grumpy, and moodier person. This makes sense however considering the events that Ema has gone through since we last saw her. Upon returning to the US in hopes of becoming a forensics investigator, Ema was disappointed when she failed it and was instead hired as a detective in the criminal affairs department. If that wasn't bad enough, she also had to deal with her boss rock god/prosecutor Klavier Gavin. She’s not happy about everything that has happened to her and she's not shy at all about showing it.
She doesn’t enjoy talking to people unless they have something interesting to speak about with (which in her case, it usually must involve science). Up until Apollo and Trucy showed her that they were somehow connected to Phoenix, she thought they were just irritating kids pretending to play dectective and was very cold to them. When they don’t, she’s rather dismissive and likes to reply that she’s snacking and they’re disturbing here. If someone annoys her, then Ema will more likely than not to toss a few Snackoos at their head or drown them out with her extremely loud munching. It’s rather easy to irritate or frustrate Ema as well; so the very typical end result will be a Snackoo to the head. It's either that or she'll chew really loud so that she drowns out the person talking. She's not the best at quick witted remarks if the teasing hits home, but she has been known to make people hold their tongue when she's given enough time.
This isn’t to say that Ema is rude all the time. If you flatter her about how awesome her science skills are and are genuinely interested in the world of science, she’ll be like putty in anybody’s hands. Trucy ends up suggesting to Apollo that maybe the way to Ema's heart is to butter her up and flatter her about her amazing science skills, and when people do this, she tends to have this confident air about her. Sharing the love of science with people is something that Ema loves doing, so if you flatter her and really do want to learn about science, you can bet the Ema is going to be your best friend, or at the very least she'll like you. If you also show her that you are acquainted with a certain spiky haired lawyer, she becomes a much warmer person.
‘Science’ is pretty much a magic word around Ema because her whole personality changes instantly and she reverts back to her 16 year old self. Even though she’s grown up into a grumpy, Snakoo-throwing adult, her love for science is still enough to make her act like a child. Apollo put this change in her personality pretty well by saying that she seemed to have this 'glow' about her when she is conducting forensic experiments.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Even though Ema complains to no ends about her job, she is actually a pretty decent detective when she wants to be. She always carry some sort of forensic kits around with her and when there is no forensics team at present, she’s more than happy to take on the job herself. She uses her own money to pay for the different equipment as she is only a detective and doesn't actually have access to those kinds of things. Ema is able to discover small details that would often be overlooked at a crime scene. Despite failing the test to become a forensics investigator, Ema is still an intelligent and quick-thinking person. People just wouldn’t think that as they see her doing nothing but standing there, eating Snackoos and throwing them at people.
She has a strong spirit and is a fairly tough person. Ema knows how to handle herself and doesn’t give up easily on something especially if she believes strongly about something. Take for example in case 5-3 after she found out that her whole testimony for the most part was nothing but a joke because she had no idea that Machi could in fact see. Yes, Ema was angry, but she resolved to make up for it by finding evidence for the case.
Ema is rather dismissive to people that she doesn’t find interesting or that she doesn’t like will the glimmerous fop please stand up? She also has a really short temper and can’t stand it when people make fun of her or irritate her, all of which are very easy to achieve with Ema. If someone is to do that, she'll also drown them out with her very loud chewing.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Ema always has her handy dandy pack of forensics equipment with her. Always. That and a bag of snackoos. So there better be some snackoos in Vatheon or someone is gonna get cut. She does a pretty amazing impression of Kristoph Gavin as well. Not sure how that would come in handy, but it’s there. (This is head canon here derp;;) Although the SL-9 incident was finally closed ages ago, Ema still does have the occasional nightmare from time to time but they are very rare.
She can’t really put up with much from her boss, Klavier, and insists on calling him a glimmerous fop when he's not around which he is probably very aware of. She calls him Mr. Gavin to his face though and despite this, she is still respectful to him but with tons of muttering and grumbling under her breath.

“Hnrg?!” Ema jolted from her dream, an opened bag of snackoos in her arms and her green eyes blinking as she tried to remember what had been happening previously. She had been at the prescient finishing up some last minute paper work when she kind of dozed off. So if that’s where she was…why the hell was she underwater? She let out a gasp, bubbles escaping from her mouth and she clutched at her throat trying to breathe only to realize that she was breathing fine. She grabbed the bag of snackoos that she had let go and stuffed them back into her bag for safe keeping as she tried to logically figure out what was going on. Scientifically speaking, it was difficult for a human to survive underwater very long without some sort of oxygen or breathing aid, so she should technically be dead but she wasn’t.
How she ended up here was another story. It took her a moment, but her eyes narrowed as her mind went to the first person that she immediately blamed for her troubles: Klavier Gavin. A growl of frustration emitted from her mouth as she stomped off choosing a direction at random. So what if she had a little power nap at her desk? Of course she took her work seriously; why else would anyone else stay late? It was his fault that she had to stay so late anyway! That glimmerous fop, always going around being just so glittery and fop like; she could hardly stand it. If she had passed her forensics aptitude test there was no way she would have had to deal with him and she probably wouldn’t have landed here...Wherever here was.
So as our detective set off in search of someone and some answers, there were only a few thoughts on her mind:
1.) Whoever got her into this mess was going to get it and
2.) …There had better be Snackoos in this around here. Her supplies were looking pretty bleak.
