Things I couldn't do before my Mid-Life Crisis

Mar 26, 2009 16:22

I've avoided blogging for months and months, for a completely stupid reason. A door in my life closed and another opened; I am living such a different life now that I've wanted to write an entry that bridges the gap--that takes stock of the past and explains how I got to where I am now, before allowing subsequent entries to carry me into my future.

I've found myself on a number of occasions... I usually then go and lose it [1] down the back of the sofa not long afterwards. ;p

[1] "it" in this case, probably refers to my sanity more than anything else.

Still, at least you'll know where to look next time you lose it, eh?

True, but that doesn't help matters.... my sofa is an N-dimensional construct, which makes finding stuff tucked away in it a right bugger. ><

Ah. Yup, that's sofas for you. I found a JCB down the back of mine once.

Well I do share a few of those things with you - but the only one which was changed significantly by moving (away from relatives) was "Manage my health my way" (by not having people bringing allergens into my vicinity). I never did let other people dictate my bug collecting / looking / "sniffing" (usually metaphorically in my case) etc, dressing, kissing etc or climbing habits just because they might be embarrassed. That was *their* problem not mine.

I do generally prefer not to get lost and was usually the one to do the coping anyway (eg learning the local lingo, having a map, keeping the group together etc). However, the ability to travel impulsively is roughly inversely correlated with the number of people needing to be organised simultaneously.

Agreed that it's generally someone else's problem, although, if you live with someone, it's good to take their feelings into consideration regarding things like who or what you invite into the building.

I'm also enjoying the fact that I can walk down the road here without getting abuse from passers-by--mainly because everyone around here looks like they got dressed in the dark. They might sometimes laugh at my odd socks but they'll follow it up with an invitation to tea.

Hey, it's Scotland! They may very well have got dressed in the dark: too far north to have daylight and too (stereotypically) mean to turn on any artificial light. ;-)

Re your gallons of spawn: if it isn't already too late, why not split the difference - tip half outside now and keep half inside for safety and observation. That's what I did. Even the few hours of near freezing temperatures it had experienced in the pond before I rescued it was enough to kill some of it off. My frogs seem to choose the stupidest times to lay.

Thanks ever so much for the frogspawn advice. I was just about to email you to ask you, when I saw this reply.

My original plan was to keep maybe one clump for observation... I'm kinda worried that if I keep too much all together, it might die. Like I said, there's 10 gallons of it--and that's without the water. It's in a sort of half-waterbarrel thing atm. I've been jiggling it about in an attempt to keep it aerated.

But, yes... I'll release 5 gallons tomorrow.

Re MAAR (Mark All As Read):

I suggest an iterative process for minimum message loss. First, read all the interesting new stuff. Then refresh to see if there's more new stuff. If there is, then read anything interesting from that too (which should take less time). Repeat until it hardly took you any time to read or there was no new stuff at all. Then quickly press the button to mark that position as read.

That process can take a whole day some days, but it's what I often do. I get a LOT of plurks. Need to cut down on friends...

This is probably the most hopeful thing I've ever read. On a day with less hope than usual.

Aw. What a nice thing to be told. I hope things turn out as well for you.
