It was a strange city, and seemed to have been cast up in the valley one winter's night like some prehistoric creature that was now clawing its way up the mountainside. I've been in a couple of quite interlocking steep slanted places. One in Cornwall, I think.

Has any TV show or film been set in your one?

Nice! I lived in one on Corfu too, but I do like this guy's writing. This intro to the book struck me as somewhat Gormenghasty, although later on it's more like Under Milk Wood.

A film was made of one of Kadare's books, which all seem to be set in this place, Gjirokaster. The film is called Le General de l'Armee Morte (The General of the Dead Army), but it doesn't seem to be available any more, sadly.
