Suddenly, Python!

Jul 07, 2011 23:53

So, yesterday, i was trudging through my morning routine before work. My doorbell rings, it's my neighbor, asking if my snake has gotten out. *check* nope! I get dressed hastily and go see what she's got... I see about two+ feet of ball python butt sticking out from under her front porch.

the hell!? Not how i expected to start my morning. However...

He (only a guess based on prominent spurs) didn't want to come out, but neither did he fit in any further. I had the neighbor's son fetch a sportsbottle of water, which i poured in the hole he was exploring, and he promptly let go and came out.

I thanked my neighbor for getting me. This is obviously somebody's pet who either got out or was turned loose. He's a little sweetheart, very chill, not at all aggressive, okay with being handled. Rather adorable. I've got him in one of tesla's old enclosures, for the moment, he seems to be doing fine.

I'm not sure if he's some color morph or just bone stock wild type, but i figure folks here could spot if he's something special. The neighbor i rescued him for did some asking around, but nobody in our court has lost a snake recently. She let the HOA know that we'd found one and i was taking care of it, in case somebody calls to report it lost.

He was whistling a bit when he breathed when i got him initially, but he could have been a little panicked and waterlogged. I haven't heard it since, and the inside of his mouth was fine, except for a bit of dirt/gunk/crud which was fished out with a damp q-tip.

It doesn't take him long to uncurl and go exploring.

"PTHBBBT!!!"

Belleh!! I remember that my friend's ball Yami had some very regular alternating black marks on/near his belly scales. This little guy seems a bit pale in his coloration on the lower half of his body. Some kind of morph?

Hi there, i'm being cute!

He's got a few marks, not sure if they're just scrapes, or injuries from live prey. This one's in about the middle of his back. One of his marks is pretty obviously about 80-90% healed, and none of them look infected.

And another on his tail, you can kind of see this one in the first picture as well.

dawww. The top of his head has a mark, not sure if it's just rough scales or a healed injury.

I know ball pythons are supposed to be pretty docile, but i'm really amazed at how chill this little guy is.

His temporary domicile.

We're going to ask around and see if he belongs to anybody nearby. If not, i may look at re-homing him. Assuming we don't find an anxious owner, is there somebody near the DC area who would like a ball python?
