I'm running low on items to read, so I am looking for book recommendations from friends (and, well, I guess enemies and acquaintances too). I like most non-depressing story based books. (They can even be depressing, if they have a good story ( Read more... )

My brother is pushing me towards Homicide by David Simon. The TV show by the same name was based on his work, and the HBO series The Wire is also based on his writing.

My dad says it's good too.

I recently read Spin by Robert Charles Wilson and found it to be one of the most interesting stories I'd ever read. The other books of his are interesting too.

Anything by Terry Pratchett. Check out Good Omens at least.

I'm also a big fan of the works of Robert J. Sawyer.

If you haven't read the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillup Pullman, it's worth checking out. We read the first book in my SF lit class last spring. We also read A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller, Jr. which is an interesting take on the post-apocalyptic (and if you watched Babylon 5 you'll see the inspriration for an episode). Also anything by Kurt Vonnegaut.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin is hands-down the best fantasy-ish series I've ever read. The first book is titled A Game of Thrones. 4 books have been written, and there will be 7 in total.

w00t! Tones of new things to read.

I've read Terry Pratchett before, and I think I've read the His Dark Materials trilogy, but the rest look new and exciting.

I think it's high time you read some Philip K Dick, perhaps "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" or maybe "Ubik" or even "The Man in the High Castle". If Dick isn't your thing you could try "Armor" by J. Steakly or "The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester.
