As weekend supervisor at a dual diagnosis rehab facility I worked closely with several psychiatric nurses and we often talked about how codependency seemed to be such an important part of a caretakers' psyche. They always reminded themselves that giving too much is just as bad as not giving enough. And the nurses knew they sometimes had trouble drawing boundaries, because when they did finally put some needy patient back at arm's length, they felt GUILTY.
Sometimes striking a healthy balance is hard to do!
But I believe in your instance you did nothing wrong.

The psychologist too thought it might turn out to be more enabling for him at this point.
