the slow decent into madness begins with a beep

Unlike most artists I've met, who like to have some sort of background sound while they're working, I can't think at all while listening to music. Voices are okay, but anything that has a pattern is hard to shut out. Man jokes that I've got dog-ears, that I'm overly sensitive, but it's distracting. It's like hearing everything all the time and ( Read more... )

My landlord (upstairs neighbor) went to Greece for a MONTH and his smoke detector started beeping on about the 6th day. We actually had to learn to cope! Luckily, you couldn't hear it from the bedroom, but it was pretty loud and distracting from everywhere else.

Egad, that's horrible. I can at least hold out hope that SOMEONE across the street will complain to the super. Knowing for certain that no one could do anything about it (as in your case) would probably send me over the edge! I imagine you spent an unusual amount of time in the bedroom that month?
Actually, how long did it last before the battery finally just gave out? Did it take the whole month?

I can listen to music while I work. Actually, I can put one song on a loop and listen to it endlessly because it just turns into background noise. This is why certain songs on my playlist have 130 plays on it.

But the past two days, the fire alarm system or SOMETHING in our office building has been beeping and it's annoying as all hell.

Ah, if I could only listen to your icon all day instead. :)

My sympathies for your horrible building noise! Can you at least wear headphones or something to drown it out while you're working?

Sometimes our smoke alarm battery does that beeping thing when I'm at home alone and my parents are at work. I can't change it, so I have to wait until they come home (around 6pm) until it's fixed. Those few hours drive me insane - I can't imagine a few days. That sound seriously makes me cringe with every beep.

Our old detector (before we replaced it) would inevitably start the beeping at about 4 am. Every time. Nothing like waking up to that sound. Ugh. I cringe, too. Still, having it across the street isn't nearly so bad as being in the same room with it. You must never be so happy to see your parents as on those days. :)

I have a similar problem, except it's with all my senses. It's hard to sleep.

Yikes, that's frightening. May I suggest heavy drinking?

For the last two nights it has been a baby crying across the yard on one side and my loud ass neighboring snoring through the bedroom wall on the other.

I am a zombie right now. Mmmmm, brains. . .

...taste great, sauted with butter!
In all seriousness, my deepest sympathies. :(
