Weekday dim sum is the best

Apr 10, 2009 13:02

Man's home from work today so we got up this morning and popped over to Flushing for awesome, yummy, discount (!) dim sum. I'm still totally full. Actually, I was totally full when the loh bak goh (turnip cake) came around but we ordered it anyway. It was just slightly crispy and (apparently) impossible to resist. Afterward, we cut over to the HK ( Read more... )

You were totally in my hood! I've only been to the HK supermarket once so far. I usually go to the GW or one of the little markets closer to the train. Where did you go for dim sum? Sounds like a lovely afternoon.

You are so lucky to live there! How do you like it?
We went to Jade Asian, which is our current favorite for dim sum. Apparently all dim sum are $2 on weekdays. Pretty cool. Where's the GW mart? We tend to go to the HK one since it's right by our bus stop and seems to carry more Canto-centric stuff.

I like it. I live just far enough from the main drag that I don't get overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle, but close enough to get my fill of delicious treats whenever I want. They just opened a new GW on Northern Blvd next door to Flushing Town Hall. It used to be a Sears, if that helps. It may be a bit more out of your way, I'm not sure which bus you take.

Hey, I think I walked past that place before it opened. It looked huge! I take the Q19 (to Astoria), so the stop right on Northern Blvd. would be pretty close to this market, I think. Have you ever tried the tea specialty place along that stretch of Northern? I can't remember right now what it was called, but the owners (and their dog) were so sweet. It's this tiny basement place and they immediately sit you down to drink tea with them, even before you buy anything.
Oh, and if you don't mind -- how's the commute to Manhattan? We've tossed the idea around of potentially moving out there at some point, but that's one of the primary sticking points.

we love Tung Yi Fung for dim sum. SOO delicious. always packed on weekends though so you have to get there before the crazy rush. though seating for 2 is probably easy to get any time.
my review is on here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/tung-yi-fung-flushing#hrid:GVqS4T8IZwUYchBB1DW-1g/src:self

best supermarket: it's relatively new, it's called Chung Fat. here's a photo i took last time i was there- http://www.flickr.com/photos/milkshakepants/2956390346/

Tung Yi Fung used to be our standby until they were closed for a week or two and we had to try other places. Now we're nuts about Jade Asian. I'm sure it will come around again. We're pretty fickle. :)
I've walked past the Chung Fat market, but haven't tried it yet. I'll definitely have to make it a point to check it out. Thanks!

yeah i heard they were closed. we went there recently after they reopened and hardly anyone was there for dinner. i wonder if everyone got scared off.. or maybe no one knows they've reopened.

oh and PS- cook purple yams just like regular yams or sweet potatoes - roast in oven or microwave. they are very starchy and mildly sweet.

Awesome! That's what I was going to try, but it's good to have confirmation!
