“Careful. Careful!” Hermione exclaimed, snatching at Draco’s wrist. “You’re putting in too much shrivelfig.”

“I know what I’m doing, Granger,” Draco growled, glancing over at the bushy haired girl. “Kindly let go of my wrist. Need I remind you that my potions grades are higher than even yours, AND that I’m the only reason we even have this lab time in the first place?”

“You’ve done that enough,” Hermione snapped, letting go of Draco’s wrist as she picked up the quill, frowning and drawing her wand to vanish the blots that had peppered on the bottom of the parchment when she’d dropped the quill. “What was the reaction when you added the shrivelfig?”

“The potion bubbled and turned a soft blue,” Draco said, sighing as he pulling off his dragonhide gloves. “What was the predictor?”

“Well, it figured the blue, but the bubbling.... Probably just a by-product of you adding too much of the ingredient,” Hermione murmured as she scratched out the results on her comparison table.

Draco growled, slamming his gloves down onto the work table, “I might not be a twelve OWL student, bloody Head Boy, or even a fucking prefect anymore, Granger, but I will not be treated like the intellectual equivalent of dirt. I know what I’m doing, and Malfoys don’t take well to being patronized by mudbloods.”

“We’re back to that, then?” Hermione asked, soft dejection in her voice. “You’d been doing so well for awhile there. Almost thought you’d forgotten.”

“Forgotten what?” Draco scowled. If she was taking another shot at him... He had the right to be angry! He wasn’t just about to forget how she was treating him.

“That I was a ‘mudblood’. You haven’t called me that in a couple of days,” Hermione said, eyes glued on her parchment. “We should move on to the next step... Add five runespoor fangs --“

“Done,” Draco said, tipping the five he’d set out into the caldron.

“Five minutes apart! Damnit, Draco!” Hermione exclaimed, leaping to her feet and grabbing his arm, flinging them both underneath the work table as the caldron literally exploded, spraying purple liquid all over the items set out. Hermione winced as the soft sizzle confirmed her worries. “Adding them all at once made the potion prone to explosions and extremely corrosive...”

Draco turned his gaze to meet hers, instantly regretting it when he did. There was naturally very little room underneath the work table, and his head at this angle put them nose to nose with each other. There was a long pause between the two of them as they just stared at each other, the only sounds in the room the sizzle of equipment being dissolved and the pairs’ breathing. Draco was the one that finally broke the silence.

“You’re telling Snape.”
