“I should expel you, Mister Black. You do understand that, right?”
Sirius looked up at the Headmaster. His usually mirthful blue eyes were sharp, trained on his own deep grey. Sirius felt his heart shrink under the gaze. “Yes, sir... I understand.”
“Do you understand what could have happened? You’re very lucky that nothing DID happen, Mister Black,” The Headmaster scowled. Sirius had never seen him scowl before. “And Mister Snape has agreed to keep his mouth closed on the matter.”
“In all due respect, sir, I don’t think you should trust him to keep that promise...”
“Frankly, I trust Mister Snape much more than I trust you right now...”
Sirius scowled, lowering his eyes to the floor of the office, “He’s going to get Remus hurt... Just to get back at me and James. He’ll use this against us.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he used it against you,” Albus said. “He is a Slytherin, after all. But I doubt Mister Lupin is in any danger. My advice, young man, would be to ease up on Mister Snape. Who knows, you might actually get along. He seems to get on well with your brother.”
Sirius swallowed the bile that rose in his throat, “Yes, sir.”
“That’s a good boy. Now, get back to the common room.”
Sirius exited the office, not even pausing to watch the Griffin statue close behind him. Despite being spared from being expelled, and not really having any punishment inflicted on him by the Headmaster, he couldn’t help but hate Dumbledore more than at that moment than he ever had before.
