Title: Difficult For You
Pairing: Severus/Remus, Hermione, Albus Dumbledore

Warnings: Angst.
Summary: He told them to turn to page 394, not because he wanted them to know, but because Albus never gave him a choice.
Notes: Set during Harry's third year.

“I refuse,” Severus snaps.

Albus gives a dismissive wave of his hand. “No matter, Severus. You’ve given me your word.”

There is silence as the two men stare each other down.

“Why?” Severus asks at last, casting his eyes toward the floor.

Albus smiles, but there is nothing aside from sadness etched upon his face. “I know that this is hard for you-”

“Why?” Severus repeats.

“I want to see Miss Granger figure it out.”

“The girl?” Severus croaks. “What does the girl have to do with anything? I understand that you test Potter’s abilities on occasion, but the girl’s abilities are plain as day. As reliable a know-it-all as ever lived.”

Albus shakes his head. “Miss Granger’s brain will one day be Harry’s greatest ally.”

“Severus, please,” Remus whispers. “You can’t. I- Where will I go?”

Severus kisses him because there isn’t time for anything else. “I must do as he’s asked, Remus, and you... could live with me. But please, drink it.”

Remus does, and after he has shrunk into a soft and silky wolf, he curls up at Severus’s feet on the cold dungeon floor, even though he knows what is coming.

“Werewolves,” Severus says slowly, and the girl’s head snaps up.

“But sir-” she squeaks.

“Miss Granger,” he interrupts. “I am asking you to turn to page 394.”

And she does, her impertinence silenced for a moment as she flips to the proper page.

She reads the title.

And Severus can see the gears start turning.
