There was no sound except the rush of the wind and the faint clicking of the small bones hanging from the leather straps along the sharp heads of the Thestrals. “They can’t stand the jingle bells,” Lucius had explained.

The three Thestrals, harnessed side-by-side, had their wings folded tightly against their charcoal flanks, but they trotted so fast that the vast expanse of snow on either side of the sledge raced by as an indistinct blur, the sparse clumps of frost-covered trees barely visible in the dazzling whiteness.

Hermione sank lower under the sable fur covers, the silky hairs tickling her reddened cheeks.

Severus’ left arm wrapped around her shoulders.

Suddenly the sledge bumped against an invisible obstacle. Lucius pulled hard on the reins. The Thestrals stopped, wings unfolding in agitation.

Lucius leaped from the driver’s seat and bent to inspect the damage. When he straightened up, his expression was grim.

“We’ve hit the stump of a gingerbread house. The sledge can’t ride over sugar.”

“So we’re stuck?” She’d been warned that inspecting the Malfoy domains in Durmstrang might prove an interesting adventure.

“Until the stump melts down. It should take a few hours. Until then, we have to keep warm, preferably without charms so as to spare our magic.”

Hermione nodded as Lucius slipped under the covers next to her.

As Lucius’ arms closed around her and Severus’ lips descended on her own, a last fugitive thought crossed her mind. She’d have to thank Luna for that gingerbread charm.
