Title: The Old Man's Gift

Summary: Dumbledore sends Severus a gift.

Severus took one look at the couple walking arm in arm and scowled. As he stalked by, robes billowing behind him, he heard Hermione call out to him. Choosing to ignore her, he continued along without a glance back.

Finally entering his room, he spied a gaily wrapped red box on his table. Snatching it, he snarled, “What is it this year, old man?”

Since his death, Dumbledore had mysteriously arranged for a gift to be delivered to Severus every Christmas eve. Sighing, Severus tore open the wrapping and opened the box. A wisp of golden smoke floated out, forming words.

For everything that you have done, I grant you your greatest desire.

Severus blew at the words and watched them dissipate. What does Dumbledore know of my greatest desire? Even I didn’t know until recently.

At that moment there was a knock at the door. Severus stalked over and opened it. To his surprise, Hermione Granger threw her arms around him and proceeded to snog him senseless. Severus’ eyes widened in shock, but he did not withdraw from her passionate kisses. After a long while, he pushed her away and sneered at her.

“Do I look like your ginger-haired friend?” he snapped.

“Ron was convinced that you were attracted to me. I had to find out.”

Severus regarded her silently. “What did you discover?” he finally asked.

“It seems that Ron isn’t as slow as I’d thought.” With that she pulled him down and began kissing him again.

As Severus sunk into her closeness he thought to himself, Old man, how on earth did you know?
