Severus Snape and the author's abandonment of his character in DH---
Severus was a crucial character in the series, especially the later books, and his death scene provided Harry with vital information. Aside from the favorite fandom answer: Severus didn't die. (I assure you that I won't argue against that.) Why do you believe JKR failed to provide ( Read more... )

Canon-schmanon. Jo Rowling contradicted herself in her writing (and later made up stuff to "explain" her inconsistencies) enough for fan writers to simply take the story as it suits themselves. Write whatever moves or soothes your own emotions. Anyone who dislikes what you write is completely free to leave it alone.

1- Snape is not a disposable character. He's totally integral to the plot.

2- Snape had to die because he was the end result of Dumbledore's plan. Dumbledore didn't plan it to have Snape live. Otherwise the wand business would have been told to him. If Snape knew Draco possessed the elder wand, he took that secret to grave instead of trying to save himself.

I dont agree with JKR's way of offing him. But Snape's death and Lupin's death are parallel. They were fighting a war, they were casualties.

One could argue in the books Snape didn't die. Why she wrote it that way, I dont have a clue-LOL. But I remain a Snape fan, whether he's dead or alive. =)

Why do you believe JKR failed to provide closure or evidence of death for a key player in her universe?

Because I think that character is her opinion of herself, of mistakes she made earlier in life that had lasting negative consequences for an innocent child, and she, like many of us, doesn't believe she deserves too much credit or forgiveness for her flaws.

I think she's inept at writing, but she's really an endearing person at heart, and somehow that comes through what she writes. People love her, and make excuses for her errors and clumsiness.
