Summary: Harry’s life is ordinary but one day that all changes.
Oh Billy Brown had lived an ordinary life.
Two kids, a dog, and a cautionary wife.
While it was all going according to plan
Then Billy Brown fell in love with another man.
Harry Potter had never had an ordinary life, not until after the defeat of Voldemort. After that day, everything became so damn ordinary. He got married to a muggle. He denounced his magic and made an ordinary life with her. They had two kids. A little girl named Lily and a little boy named Albus. When his wife asked why he wanted to name his son Albus, Harry told her that his grandfather’s name was Albus and that he was dead now. That was the strangest part of his life now. They owned an ordinary house, in an ordinary neighborhood. It had an ordinary green yard and an ordinary white picket fence. They even had a dog. It was a Dalmatian whose name was Jane. Everything about his life had become ordinary. At least until January 9th, 2006. Then all hell broke loose because Harry Potter fell in love with another man.
~*~January 9th~*~
Harry had been walking down the street on his way to work when he ran smack into a pole. This behavior was not normal for Harry but he had been staring across the road and didn’t notice the pole that was looming down upon him. What was he staring at, you ask? Well it so happens that this day Harry Potter was staring at a tall man, dressed in black business suit with a red tie, with longer hair that went down to his shoulders, and skin as white as snow. Harry knew this man. And knew him well. This man had been his teacher in another life. This man lived across the world from him. His name was Severus Snape and Harry had always appeared to abhorred him. So as you can imagine, seeing him across the street was quite a sight for poor Harry.
As he banged into the pole, the noise shook a huge drift of snow off of a nearby building, which proceeded to cover him. This caused quite a bit of attention, and unfortunately for Harry, the one that showed the most attention was his old professor.
Snape crossed the road quite quickly to see if he could help whoever was just covered by a large pile of snow. As he stuck out his hand to take that of the “snowman’s”, the man looked up into Snape’s eyes and Snape recognized him immediately. It was the wizarding worlds hero himself.
“Well if it isn’t Mr. Harry Potter! How have you been son?” Exclaimed Snape happily, “It seems like ages since I’ve seen you.”
To see Snape smile was a new experience for Harry, and he wasn’t exactly sure why but for some reason this made his stomach jump. “Snape! What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be teaching? It’s so nice to see you.” At this Snape grabbed Harry’s hand and pulled him up. “It’s awful nice to see you sir but I really must be going or I will be late for work. Maybe I’ll see you around?”
“How about I walk with you to your work? That way we can catch up and you won’t be late?” Snape already started walking in the direction Harry had been going. “What do you say?”
“I suppose, sir.” And with that they started walking to the bookstore that Harry and his wife owned. They chit chatted the whole way and as it turns out Snape was away on holiday because it was his birthday. This trip to Minnesota was a gift from McGonagall. She figured Snape could use a week or two away from all the trouble of teaching. As they approached the store, “Well Harry it was nice seeing you. I do hope to run into you again and maybe meet this wife you talk about so much. You guys sound like you are happy.”
“Well hey how about you come over for dinner tomorrow night. I’ll introduce you to her and the kids. We’ll make chicken. Here’s my number, just give me a call and I’ll give you directions to my house.” Harry replied.
Snape was slightly shocked that Harry Potter, who hated him with such a passion, was inviting him over for dinner, but how could he refuse. “Well that sounds splendid. I can’t wait. What time?”
“I’d say about 7ish. The kids go to bed pretty early so this way we could spend more time reconnecting.”
“Sounds like a plan. I’ll give you a call tomorrow then. Have fun at work and thank you for the invite.”
“Well thank you for the hand earlier. Goodbye Professor.”
“Oh and Harry, one last thing, you CAN call me Severus now. It seems weird to be called Professor while I’m on vacation.”
“Oh alright, Goodbye Severus, see you tomorrow.”
“Yes see you later Harry.”
And with that Snape walked away. Harry stood in front of his store for at least another five minutes watching the man walk down the street. All Harry could think about was how Snape, no Severus, had changed. He had become a totally different man. He smiled now for goodness sakes. How positively odd!
That day was the first day in a long time that Harry had felt anything other than ordinary. As he entered his shop he saw his wife. She was putting books away on the shelves and failed to notice him. He looked at her. Boy she certainly was ordinary. She had brown hair that was dull, she had an average body, she wore average clothes that, in his opinion, covered too much of her body, she wore perfectly average glasses. Everything about her screamed ordinary. But now when Harry looked at her all he was dull. There was his wife, the woman he thought he loved, the mother of his children and all he could think of was how dull his life had become.
His wife turned around and finally saw him, “Hi sweetheart. How was your morning?”
“It was fine. I actually ran into a person that I used to know and I kind of invited him over for dinner tomorrow. You don’t mind do you?” He asked, knowing perfectly well that she didn’t. “He used to be my professor back in high school.”
“Oh yes that sounds fine, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to stay long. You forget that tomorrow night I’m supposed to take the children over to mother’s so that we can make their costumes for the play. So I’ll make dinner but then I’ll have to leave.”
“Oh I completely spaced. Do you want me to reschedule?”
“Oh don’t bother, I’m sure I’ll meet him eventually.”
Harry then walked into the back of the store and started to go over the merchandise. He hated this part of his job. Actually this was his whole job. It was so ordinary and boring. Harry just wanted some spice back in his life, Severus reminded him of this. Harry hadn’t realized it but he had gotten boring and ordinary.
~*~January 10th~*~
Snape had arrived earlier for dinner. It was only 6:30 but he had gotten nervous and antsy and decided that he had better get there. As he rang the doorbell he heard a barking coming from the inside of the house. And it certainly was an ordinary house, was all Severus thought as he waited for someone to answer the door. He then heard a little child giddily scream and heard footsteps pounding on the floor. As the door opened a small girl, no older than 7, appeared. She had dark brown hair and wore a little ballerina bottom and had on a pink leotard underneath it. She gave one look at the man and screamed and slammed the door. Snape stood awestruck and rang the doorbell again. This time Harry opened it.
“Sorry about that,” Harry apologized while holding back the dog, “She does that sometimes. She’s very hyper. Come on in. I forgot to mention earlier that my family will be leaving in a bit to go to their grandmother’s house to get their costumes done for the school play. My little girl, that so rudely slammed the door in your face, is named Lily and my son over there in the corner eating that block, well his name is Albus.”
Snape shook his head, “Well it certainly fits, doesn’t it.”
“Yes, yes it does. He’s a mischievous fellow, that one. And my wife is in the other room. Honey come on in here and meet Severus.”
Harry’s wife entered the room from the kitchen, bringing in a scent of chicken, potatoes, and corn with her. “Severus I’d like you to meet my wife Veronica. Veronica meet my old professor Severus. He taught Chemistry. His birthday was yesterday, he’s here on vacation.”
When Harry mentioned Chemistry Snape gave him a look of confusion that quickly disappeared. How strange it was that Harry hasn’t told his wife of his magic. “It’s lovely to meet you Veronica. What a gorgeous home you have. Did you decorate it yourself?”
“As a matter of fact I did. And while I’d love to actually get to know you I must gather up the kids and whisk them away. Come on Lily help me with your brother. We need to get going. Say bye to daddy.” Veronica started shouting down the hallway.
As the kids were wrangled up and all their winter clothes were forcefully plastered onto their bodies the children kept sneaking queer looks at the Potions Professor. After everyone had been bundled up, the kids said goodbye to Harry and they and Veronica left. Now it was just Snape and Harry alone.
Harry went into the dining room and told Snape to take a seat in the living room. He had a few more preparations to do before Snape could join him. Harry had been thinking a lot about how ordinary and boring his life had become and how within moments of seeing Severus again he got this rush of exhilaration and how much more he liked it. In the dining room Harry had put the dishes out and started to fill them with food. He then took out a couple candles and placed them in the middle. He lit each one separately, turned down the lights, and put on some good old Rufus Wainwright in the background. The set was almost perfect. Now all he needed was Severus.
“Severus, could you please come in here.”
Snape got off of the couch and headed into the dining room. As the pushed the door open what he saw he had never expected. The room looked almost romantic. If the other person had been anyone else it would have definitely appeared romantic. But this was Harry and Snape wasn’t about to lie to himself and say that Harry was acting romantic. Snape pulled out the open chair and sat down. It was right across from Harry. Harry looked into Snape’s eyes and started the speech he had been preparing since 3 that morning.
“I left the wizarding world in hopes of finding ordinary. And boy have I, and in abundance. But now I realize that it was wrong of me. I didn’t want ordinary. I wanted comfortable. Sure this life is comfortable but it is also too boring for me. Yesterday when I saw you I thought I was dreaming. I thought that my mind was playing a trick on me by showing me the one person I’ve always loved. When you came over to help me up, and you smiled, I fell in love again. I know that you couldn’t possibly reciprocate my feelings, but I needed to tell you. I needed to confess that I love you. I needed to just say, Severus Snape I love you.”
Snape was awestruck. He didn’t know what to say. It was as if he’s wildest dream had come true. But since he was speechless he just starred.
Harry took this all wrong and figured he had weirded this poor man out. “Sev I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. If you want to leave I understand. Here let me get your coat.” And with that Harry got up and started to go into the other room.
Snape, faster than a cheetah, was up and in front of Harry. Sure he couldn’t think of anything to say but he could think of something to do. Snape grabbed Harry’s arms and pulled him into the deepest, more passionate, most intoxicating kiss either had ever experienced. After an eternity they parted.
Finally something popped into Snape’s head to say, “Wow!”
After that dinner, nothing in Harry’s life was ever ordinary again. At first he and Severus snuck around behind Veronica’s back but Harry couldn’t take the guilt. Later that year in March he filed for divorce. Harry returned to Hogwarts with Snape in April and they lived a perfectly odd but comfortable life together where every kiss they shared was like their first. How extraordinary!
