I would certainly condone your charging a nominal fee for a shoot. I now have to make choices between gigs that are offering to pay and gigs that are simply voluntary. Anything that requires your time and equipment and careful, professional eye is something you should be able to charge for. Now I'm not saying every time someone asks for you to take a picture of them, you should demand a fee. But it does make a difference when you're asked to do shots as a photographer and not necessarily as a friend.
Besides, I understand the poor thing. I do a lot of things no charge to get my name and face out into the world, but at some point you do have to start asking for payment. (I'm fortunate enough to find patrons who simply offer anyway, like it's common knowledge.) It is your profession, and it's time to put your name on the market. Being respectable about it is certainly no crime. Good luck! Hope all is going well!
I'm not gonna be a dick about it or anything, I mean I'll totally do favors. But just sometimes it's like "...how can you expect me to do this for free?" you know? i'm sure you do.
anyway. i hope everything is going well! i feel like I haven't heard from you in a while! (aside from me reading your livejournal. but that doesn't count. haha)
So i was on the phone to chris last night, and we were talking about your facebook wall post, and he said that your photo was amazing. and he's a photographer-type-person too, so when he's here, you guys can be camera geeks at thirsty while i just sip my coffee. ;-)
ps you and his cousin have hte same name (elizabeth scott) so when you friended him on facebook he was all confused because he knew his cousin didn't go to northeastern.
next time pleeeease dont be afraid to ask. the only thing that came outta you feeling bad about charging was a missed photo set that i coulda used. like i said, i dont have much, because i too am a broke college kid, but i was getting paid 75 and you were gonna get a big cut...in the relative sense of big cuts.
