Snap. The sound seemed to echo for a few seconds. He could hear it clearly from where he stood but he made no move towards it. It felt like a natural thing to hear. He'd hear it off and on for years hadn't he?
Snap. Everything faded until the colors bled together and he couldn't tell which way was which. Then came the fire that roared to life all around him and twisted through the air like birds in flight. It tore through the buildings that were already dirty and broken to ruin and he felt an odd sense of remorse as he walked forward. People screamed and some made gurgling sounds as they gave their last breath. He didn't understand how he could walk past these dying people without offering a hand to help them.
Snap. It was a different place and flags fluttered in the breeze as he saluted someone standing on a high dais. He should have felt pride and be honored to stand among all of these other people. Their leader was above them! Why couldn't he feel as excited and cheerful about that as the rest? He realized he wasn't really saluting that man high above him. He was honoring the dream that lay far beyond that trash that didn't fear god.
Snap. It was a grave this time. He recognized the flowers laid on the packed earth but for some reason the name was blurred out. He felt disappointed that he couldn't see that name no matter how many times he rubbed at the worn stone. It began to rain but he could have sworn that the rain was coming from inside him-self. There would be vengeance for this one wrong doing. He vowed that in the cold silence as the rain continued to fall.
Snap. Someone was arguing with him. He couldn't see their face but he was damn sure the brat was saying something he didn't like. Did he really have a right to judge? He was using this child to rise a little higher. Higher to some where he couldn't remember. No. But those eyes had compelled him to shield the boy from the very thing he'd told him to use. Wasn't that right? Still if the person arguing with him would listen once in a while he might be less inclined to tease him.
Snap. "Do not die! Is that clear?" He didn't know what he'd said before that but this was his only order. They'd come this far and the moment they had been waiting for was upon them. He looked at the three with him and for some reason kept looking for two more. He could feel the absence of those two people and yet there was no helping it. They had to move forward and seize this chance. There would be no others.
Snap. Then there was nothing but silence.
