You CAN play the theremin with rods, although I don't think it's very common since they're not needed and there's more precision if you just hold your hand in a precise posture. Maybe you saw that somewhere once.

I've got a theremin that I put together at my house but I think it's busted. I can show it to you at Ariel's bday if you're gonna be up at our place.
