oh, did you stay at kate's motel? i grew up ten minutes down the road on route 28! if you go back up anytime soon, don't miss brunch at sweet sue's in phoenecia. red monkey pancakes FTW!
no - we actually stayed at the Roxbury Motel, off of route 30. it was awesome! and way less expensive than kate's, though I would still love to stay in one of the airstreams she's got.
we ate brunch at sweet sue's on our way out of town - it was AWESOME. i had the 4-grain pancakes and the corned beef hash and nina had the carrot cake pancakes and the turkey sausage. all excellent. very excited to go back there.
also, there's the vintage base ball teams in roxbury and fleischmanns. if i could wrangle it i would go back up this weekend for the tournament and go by the hall of fame while i was up there. i am definitely cooking up an idea for an catskills/southern tier baseball magical mystery tour.
Yes yes yes. Also, yes. Hopefully I can show you the picture of my great-grandfather during Gehrig's farewell speech - it was up the last time I went, I'm pretty sure.
Seriously, during the season, we could totally do an Eastern League/New York-Penn League/HOF/maybe vintage base ball trip in three or four days. There's the Binghamton Mets, Oneonta Tigers, Tri-City Valley Cats, and Auburn Doubledays all within 90 minutes of Cooperstown.
Do you know next year's interleague schedule yet? If the Mets play in Toronto the Mets fans can come stay with me and we'll go to the games. Too bad CNE Stadium is gone. It was gangly, like a teenager trying to impress someone, but still - it had character.
I am excited for baseball roadtrips (and if anyone says "But the Mariners!" I will curse a great deal). I wonder what is the closest minor league team to halfway.
Also, Hockey Hall of Fame! Goalie mask room! How cool is that? (Nerdy thing I can talk about at length #14: Goalie masks)
I went to Cooperstown in 1993 or so, in November. It has a much more solemn feel with a chill in the air; Summer would be crowded and full of dripping ice cream. Late fall takes enough colour out of things so that it all looks like a historical photo.
I too have attempted to tube the Esopus and had my hat handed to me. Kicked my ass. Water was very low, so there was lots of lifting our tubes and climbing around rocks and getting assorted body parts cut up, etc. Never. Again. Glad you got to enjoy it!
