Pico 2011-2016

Apr 25, 2016 11:04

Last night was very hard for me.  My cat, Pico, had been lethargic for a few days, and yesterday was clearly having trouble breathing.  As he's been diagnosed with asthma for a few years, this wasn't really unusual.  I gave him his medication, and went to work -- worried, but not too much so.  Halfway through my shift, Chad texted me, saying he wasn't any better.  Was in fact worse -- drooling now, and meowing as though he was asking for help.

My boss was kind enough to cover for me, and we took Pico to an emergency vet clinic, where they put him on oxygen.  His heart rate was much lower than a cat his age, in his distress, should have, and an ultrasound showed evidence of either heart disease, lymphoma, or severe asthmatic developments.  To find out which for sure would have meant spending 2 or 3 thousand dollars, and the vet didn't think any of the outcomes were likely to be good.

After a very difficult decision, we said goodbye to him.  It was quick, and gentle, and he went to sleep in my arms.

I thought I cried myself out last night, but typing this I see I was wrong.  My eyes hurt.

I've had pets die.  I've never had to make that decision myself, and seeing my husband cry made it that much worse -- Pico was his cat, as much as mine.

He was only four and half years old, and bold, and friendly, and he was loved.

Goodbye Pico.  I'm sorry.
