I meant to post this yesterday, but whatever. I read 59 books and a ton of short stories during 2009. My favorites were:

Oooh this is so, so perfect! My new years resolution is to read, at least, one novel every month and I had no idea what books to read, so this is great. Thanks for this :)

That's an awesome (and practical) resolution. My resolution is the same as last year. I still wanna read 100 books in a year! I can do it! I just... need to read more awesome urban fantasy and less old classics. And, you know, actually finish the books I start...

But if you ever want recommendations, I totally will give you soooome. Just let me know what kind of thing you want to read! Also, let me know what you end up reading. :D

I think you can totally read 100 books, I mean 59 is already a lot and more than half way there! The old classics would take a little more time to get through haha. I think that your resolution is really cool and I totally admire you for trying to do something challenging again :)

I have the same problem, not finishing certain books. I stopped reading The Trial 2/3s in because it got so... monotonous, and frankly wasn't that engaging to me :/

Oh yesss, recommendations *grabby hands* ;) Do you have any light-reading recommendations (shorter novels, etc.)? I'm thinking of starting off with easy books and then moving up from there. I like every genre, I'm not picky :)

Well, if you're not picky about genre, here are some of my favorite series at the moment:

Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty is a werewolf. And an awesome dj with a program called The Midnight Hour, which is basically Loveline for the supernatural. Personally, I like this series because of the pack dynamics--it starts off with the standard aggressive-alpha-male-dominates-young-new-female-wolf dealio, but quickly moves into Kitty carving her own place for herself. I also really like this series because it separates the human and wolf sides a little more than some series. When Kitty is a wolf, she's a wolf, and when she's human, she's pretty human. None of the the-alpha-howls-and-everyone-is-magically-spellbound stuff.

I pimp this book to everyone. So I'm totally glad that you're psyched about it. The guy has a blog here, which is filled with art and random awesome things. Let me know how you like it! And happy new year!

59 books??? Wow, that means more than one book per week. I used to read so much many years ago. Good times. I miss them.

"2001" sounds interesting.

Maybe, but it's barely over half my goal. :(

I can't even describe 2001 and do it justice. But you should totally read it. The movie is a sci-fi classic, and the guy who helped the director create/write the movie, wrote the book at the same time, so it's... not like the movie came out and then the book, or the book and then the movie, but they're not exactly the same either. But while the movie apparently has amazing graphics/sound, from what I've heard others say about it, the ending is totally different and idk, the beginning narration seems like it would be REALLY hard for a movie to capture and give the same meaning.

Wow, sorry for babbling...

You wanted to read 100 books??? *drops dead* Wow! That was a very ambitious goal I have to say. Maybe it works out this year? Or have you lowered your goal a bit?

I mean, I've heard of Arthur C. Clarke (which Sci-Fi fan hasn't?) and I thought I had a book written by him at home, but couldn't find it yesterday while I was skimming my shelves... Either way, I've added 2001 to my goodreads-'to read' list.

And that wasn't babbling, that was helpful information :)

Nah - same goal. But I am planning on reading a lot more urban fantasy this year, so hopefully it won't take me as long to reach each book.

Awesome. Well, I hope you enjoy it!
