Is it ironic that 3 4 years ago to the day, I was half-way through writing Before the Dawn when HBP was released, and now I'm half-way through reading it on the eve of the movie
( Read more... )
I'm pretty thrilled about the film- I'm seeing it in the wee small hours of Friday morning with a bunch of fellow costumed freaks. I'm ven more thrilled to hear how close you are to finishing your master's! I completely understand how going back and reading your own stories can get you back in a writing place, and I second wmwn's assessment of - "Before the Dawn." It's been a favorite of mine for years, and now I really want to re-read it! :D
I just realized that I started my LJ not long after reading HBP, and my first post was about my still trusting Snape, even after the events of HBP. I think it's still my favorite book, in spite of the structural issues.
And that fic was absolutely consequential in hooking me on SSHG. *glares* YOUR FAULT.
Congrats on your Masters!
I have been completely and utterly canon-shafted, and I now understand why fic writers abandon their WIPs. I can't even think Snape's name right now without crying... how the bloody hell am I going to carry on pretending everything is a-okay?!
But you finished. And boy are a lot of fangirls glad--and you turned out right when you wrote "What I Know You've Done".... *whistles*
Likewise, Before the Dawn is in my top ten, as well.
It was definitely HBP that (rather slowly) brought me to the fandom. I was duly horrified at the end, and then I annoyed il_grifone by subjecting him to a commentary on my stream of consciousness into the early hours, while I decided that the whole series only made sense if, despite everything, Dumbledore had been right to trust Snape. It took me two or three weeks and two re-readings to decide on my version of reality, but then I nailed my colours to the mast by telling it to my family and saying, if I remember rightly, '...and if that isn't the plot, Rowling is wrong.' If I had known then what I know now about her plots, I wouldn't have dared. But you were right and I was right and we were all right and the world may have turned into a more miserable place but it didn't turn upside down.

I hated that book, but I'm SO EXCITED for the movie! 15 hours and counting!
Also, Before the Dawn is STILL one of my favorite fics EVER.
Thanks for checking in; I'm glad things are going well for you! <3333
