I don't really care whether fic is in a community or in an LJ, but I did prefer my experience in my previous fandom where I could basically keep up with all my WIPs just by keeping up with my FL.

I was completely bamboozled when I first started reading HP to find that instead of clicking the cut and getting the latest chapter I was being told that in a couple of days (assuming I remembered) I'd be able to read fic at various archives, nearly all of which required me to become a member (and one of whom was so pedantic and often wrong about my first and only submission that I avoided all archives for quite a while until I discovered the friendly folks at OWL or Annie discovered me).

The problem is that I don't think the HP fandom will ever move away from its archives, so I'll never be able to just read my FL, but when time's short, I'm more likely to keep up with my FL than to keep up with an archive.

My previous fandom was like that, too. We were a very small group and we actually maneuvered on a Yahoo group, which allowed everyone to know everything that was going on. Coming to HP Land was like culture shock for me -- jumping from a readership of approximately 350 to potentially thousands was staggering. That's part of what makes where an author puts their fic so confusing.

It seems our experiences are similar, so I appreciate your thoughts on the subject. Thanks!

As a reader, I have no preference as long as it's accessible. Of course I don't really read much fic, and when I do it's centered around precious few pairings, so whether an archive is multi-pairing or not doesn't bother me.

As a writer, I prefer a community for my stuff. It's easier to find things again when they're not scattered all over my personal journal and I chose a community because I could post to that without changing login. Also, in a community, it's more clear who the poster is, rather than having two usernames to throw around.
As for archives I prefer multi-pairings, simply for the ease of not having to consider whether or not this or that fic is eligible for posting there. I seem to always end up with borderline cases.

When I started in the fandom, I read everything. Now I don't have the tie so I'm much more selective, so I definitely understand what you're saying.

You are one of several authors I know who have communities for their fic. I know authors who post to their journal, or have a separate fic journal, too. I can definitely see how having a journal or community would be easier to maintain than housing your work at one or more archives. Do you post any of your work on outside archives?

I have a few up at TPP, but those are only either things from prompt challenges or, as was the plan, my favourites. I just never got around to going over them for commas and such. It was supposed to be my learning experience see. Just turns out I'm apparently not sufficiently keen on learning so as to actually do something about it.
I've been uploading my eligible fics at GrangerEnchanted lately, but those have to be Hermione centric, so I still end up with a couple of borderline cases. There was one story in particular that I submitted kind of cautiously and was kind of expecting them to turn down.

I've had a long period though where I only posted at my own fic comm and then made a post about it on my own journal. I wanted it to be in one easily controlled place, so that if for some reason I decided to take it down, I could do it in one go. Of course lately I realised that this also had some drawbacks in that I was practically making myself invisible.
