So last night at 2am I got a phone call. It was from this woman that sings/plays at open mic night. She was really upset and I could tell. I asked her what was wrong and all of the normal stuff...you know...well she hates her life and she wants to die. We talked for about a half an hour and then I could hear her doing something. because you are a good friend and you care a lot about everyone. as far as advice, i suck at that. and realistically you probably can't say any one thing to help this person with their problems. she probably needs professionally help. as a friend the best thing you can do is listen and be there.

Wow...that's really heavy. The reason she called you is the same reason any of us would - you're a great listener, you don't judge people, and you're really empathetic. Still, that's a lot to hear. I would have been crying, too. As for Thursday, I'd try to get some resources together for her. Write her a note about why you're doing it, what she means to you, and other supportive-type things. (I don't mean that to sound as generic as it sounds!) I'd give her some numbers that she can call (including a back-up to the easy-listening hotline) just to talk to someone (of course not ruling out that she can still talk to you), as well as some couseling resources in the area. If she doesn't have insurance, you'll probably have to dig a little deeper, but help can still be found. Maybe ask someone on one of the hotlines for advice? Another option is checking with psychology/social work programs at local colleges. People that are "this close" to getting their degree/certified as counselors/psychologists need people to earn their credit hour
