Alright... listen up. I'm sure a lot of you here need this information when you're out on the road.
[Big Boss is crouched in a shelter made of snow, with various leaves, roots, bulbs, nuts, and berries arranged in front of him in plain view. (None of them are effect berries or apricorns.) Next to him is a small cardboard box, open-side-down, which is shaking occasionally as if something is trapped inside it.]
I haven't sampled everything yet, but I've figured out enough of what plants are edible, based on what I haven't had to vomit up. Take a good look, you can eat all of these. The roots are starchy and tough so they need to be boiled. And you'll need to crack the husks off of these nuts before you can eat them.
Since it's winter, if you don't have a tool for digging, try getting one of your animals to help if it can. Getting through the snow to some of these plants isn't too hard, but you'll need a tool or some help to get through the frozen ground to get to roots and bulbs.
...Now for the taste. [The most super-important part, obviously.]
These greens are a lot like lettuce, but tougher a little bit bitter. The tubers on these roots are very bitter, so you need to boil them in a couple changes of water, but once they're softened they're a lot like potatoes. The bulbs taste a lot like mild onions and go great with them. The nuts almost taste like walnuts. Now... these berries are the best part. The black ones are delicious and really sweet. The red ones are good too, but they're tart and dry.
[He's getting pretty enthusiastic about the tastes.]
There will be a lot more to eat once spring comes. I haven't yet figured out where the stores get their meat, but you can stock up on their dried meat to take with you. And I hear that "slowpoke tails" are delicious, if you find one of those.
