Caustic Theories on Autism

Dec 24, 2011 17:31

After reading around a lot, I've come across a lot of theories, studies and whatnot on Autism, and the causes. Most of these studies and theories are not only wrong, but detrimental and insulting to Autistics. Therefore I will now present some counter-theories (inspired by the silly notion of 'the truth is probably somewhere in the middle'). ( Read more... )

I should probably point out that 'caustic' typically refers to something that is corrosive, like a liquid. The word you're looking for is 'causal ( ... )

Nope, I definitely meant caustic. I.E. extreme, hard to swallow, burns when you touch it, et cetera.

I thought that 'neurotypical' meant 'anyone who doesn't have a neurological disorder', so in that vein, I would not call you neurotypical. But the fact that I'm indiscriminately describing NT's as if they're all equally bad is one of the things that's caustic about it.

(I wonder where the black-and-white "'neurotypical' means 'anyone who doesn't have autism'" comes from. Perhaps it is an attempt to garner support with an 'us against them' feeling?)

Ah, I guess that didn't get through to me, because none of these theories seems very extreme or hard to swallow to me. Then again, so many of my friends have autism that I've lost count. And I'm really not on the side of parents like Jenny McCarthy who keep whining how it's soooo hard and soooo shocking to have a child with autism. Well boo freaking hoo lady, it's way harder for the child to be misunderstood by everyone around them and then continuously being told it's their own fault.
