I just bought an hp notebook w/ windows 7 from Staples. Apparently they're getting rid of all Win 7 machines so i got mine for $269.00 cdn 6gb Rm 650 gb hd amd DUAL CORE PROCESSOR e-450. (Sorry, not used to the keyboard yet)

I checked my local stores and they only have the windows 8 now. Maybe I will call and ask, they might have something hidden...

Would a tablet do? I have a Nexus 7 that's fine for e-mail and basic web browsing, and I got a bluetooth keyboard to go with it that helps a lot. $200 new, less than that refurbished.

I should have mentioned, I didn't take my laptop on vacation, and I really didn't miss it--the Nexus managed just fine. The only disadvantage was not being able to get photos off the cameras until we got home, because the Nexus doesn't have an SD card reader. If that's something you think would matter, there are tablets that do have SD readers, although they probably won't be as cheap.
