Who wants P2000 in cold hard cash?

If you can hack into my stupid stupid brokedown hard disk (which I have yet to get back from those fools at First Data Corp., who can't find my computer bag and all the accessories in it, by the way) and extract my trapped files, I'll give it to you ( Read more... )

People have suggested booting using a Linux interface. I have a CD of Ubuntu Live (Linux Live CD). You can come over to the lab and we can work on that. Ubuntu doesn't automatically recognize USB disks (it should, but I don't know why mine doesn't) but I know how to mount it so that's not a problem.

You need to make sure that your computer boots from a CD first before the hard drive. If it doesn't, just keep presseding Delete while it's powering up so you can get into the BIOS and you can change it there.

Bring plenty of USB disks or CD-R to burn your files to.

Of course, none of this will work if it's your hard disk that's the problem. :/ Just text me if you want to try it out. Good luck!

Use knoppix. lizelle January 24 2006, 02:20:12 UTC
No reason not to use Knoppix (www.knoppix.org).
Ubuntu -might- work, but the Knoppix live cd is more
battle tested.

As you mentioned, you'll be able to do one of the ff:

1. Burn to CD
2. copy to a USB drive
3. (as suggested by SPS), copy if through the network (assuming the laptop has an ethernet port/card [note, this is probably the easiest way if it's possible. just use ftp]

Assuming the hard drive is in a recoverable state, this should work.

USB drivers lizelle January 24 2006, 02:21:39 UTC
BTW, I also meant to say that the latest versions of knoppix
(3.7 to 4.0+) have USB drivers so no need to worry about that on that front.

That being said, use ftp.:D
