Shinies

I've been thinking about purchasing an E-Reader.  It just seems like a practical idea - I've sacrificed too much luggage weight to books in the past, I can't comfortably fit more than one into my purse (inconvenient when you're ripping through a series), and our bookshelves are becoming unmanageable.  When I tentatively told Nick that I was ( Read more... )

Sony is WHOA expensive! And Kobo has a lot of marks against it on the consumer reports.

What are your thoughts on the Nook's touch screen vs the Kindle's alphanumeric pad? *rubs chin*

Could you tell me some more about the Kindle's actions in regards to publishers? That stuff doesn't come up in the comparative articles I've been reading, but I don't want to buy into an asshatty philosophy, either.

I messed around with a Nook at B&N today, and while the salesgirl struck me as a little on the pushy side, I DO like the idea of free weekly books and free Starbucks frappachinos. Apparently I'm easy. None of the local Targets have Kindles yet, so I'll just have to steal a buddy's.

I personally adore my Nook. It's easy to use, the touchscreen takes five seconds to learn how to navigate, and I just kind of really like the design of the thing. :3 You can also add on your own photos for screensavers or wallpapers (Ahimsa and John of 10-9 is my current wallpaper. Natch. XD) As well as music files and audio books. The protection plan is also fantastic. I wouldn't have believed it until a lady came in B&N while I was looking at Nooks and hers had cracked screen. She was in and out in minutes with a new Nook. :3 Also the Nook has a removable battery and a slot for a MiniSD card for more space. The Kindle doesn't ( ... )

The ability to jam an SD card in there IS compelling...but I worry about touch-screen navigation, because that can be notoriously finicky, especially as a device ages.

The Nook is way more aesthetically pleasing, but most of the reviews I'm looking at warn of continuing software bugs and touchscreen lag. But it also has the card space and the advantage of onsite repair, which I like a lot! My UBER TECH GEEK friends are all for the Kindle, though, and it does have a wider range of shiny decals to cover up its less-than-sleek design. So I'm torn...I think I may have to go to B&N and Target and just see which one I like to handle.

I've had mine a week and so far there's been no problems. I don't have screen lag on mine and I assume that could be the Nook floor models at the store because floor models DO lag from people banging them on the counter to test the sturdiness. Like the Nook girl told me mine wouldn't because of people abusing the floor model. And she was right. Fresh out of the box everything was hunky dory. :3 ( ... )

Having messed with both, I think I prefer the feel and navigation of the Kindle (the newer version did away with the stupid little joystick)...but I see rumors online about a Nook 2 hitting shelves this fall. SO. I'm going to hold off and check out how that racks up in terms of pricing and weight. I'm kind of a compulsive comparison shopper, and it would KILL me to regret a purchase that expensive!

Now if only they'd announce a release date...

That does look comparable! But I'm looking for one of the E-ink readers, and it looks like that's a light up screen. I've been doing a lot of reading on my Itouch (since both Nook and Kindle have apps), and it bothers the hell out of my eyes. I think E-ink's the way to go, if I'm going to invest in a reader.

One of my co-workers cannot live without her Nook. She brings it to work everyday and is virtually attached at the hip to the thing. If that's any indication to it's value as an E-reader, then I'd definitely suggest getting a Nook yourself.

*laughs* Is she a GOOD coworker? Because if she's on it at work every day...

Actually she is. She has a tenancy to take it to lunch and from what I know of her, she carries it about as a means to entertain herself as she rides a bus too and from work daily.

I went by her desk today and it had an Alice in Wonderland screen saver from the movie, but it was all illustrative and cute. She said it's a free download for the Nook. One might say that is a perk :D
