keira knightley tutorial.

Hey guys!
Since a lot of people keep asking how I make this coloring of mine, I decided to write a tutorial. It really doesn't work for every image, so please don't follow every step of it.

>>>

Made in: Photoshop CS2
Involves: Color Balance, Levels, Curves, Selective Coloring
PSD file available

Step 1

Crop your picture. My base:

Step 2

I always sharpen my base, because I don't really like blurry icons.
So, if you want to sharpen yours, duplicate it and go to Filter>>Sharpen>>Sharpen.
Now, if your icon didn't need much sharpening, it will look way too sharpened. Lower the opacity until you are satisfied with it.
Mine is on 54%:

>>

Merge layers.

Step 3

Duplicate your base, and set the duplication to Screen. Lower the opacity until your base is bright enough. I suggest you not go under 50%, because too-bright bases work better here than dark ones. Mine is on 50%:

>>

Step 4

Here comes the first Color Balance layer. Create one, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Color Balance. Make sure that the 'Preserve Luminosity' option is on. My settings are these:

Midtones:
-10 ; 0 ; 0

Set this layer's opacity to 50%.

Again, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Color Balance. My settings are these:

Midtones:
+6 ; -4 ; -7
Shadows:
+1 ; 0 ; 0
Highlights:
-3 ; +1 ; +3

Leave this layer on 100% opacity.

>>

Step 5

Go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Levels.
My settings:

RGB
0 ; 1,20 ; 255
0 ; 255

Leave this layer's opacity on 100%.

>>

Don't worry if your icon is very bright. We will fix it.

Step 6

Create a Curves layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer >> Curves. This layer will make the icon look darker.
My settings:

RGB
I: 146
O: 87

Lower the opacity of this layer to 90%.
Duplicate the layer, and set the duplication to Pin Light, 75%.

>>

Step 7

Create another Color Balance layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Color Balance. Make sure that the 'Preserve Luminosity' option is still on. My settings are these:

Midtones:
-15 ; 0 ; 0

Create another CB layer. My settings:

Midtones:
-5 ; 0 ; 0

Leave both CB layers on 100%.

WARNING: it won't look the same if you create just one CB layer and set it to -20 ; 0 ; 0. It would be easier, but it will not be the same.

>>

Step 8

Create a Selective Color layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Selective Color. My settings are these:

REDS
+32 ; +13 ; -5 ; +10

WHITES
-5 ; -4 ; +32 ; -19

NEUTRALS
+10 ; +4 ; -3 ; -3

Lower this layer's opacity to 60%.

Create another Selective Color layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Selective Color. My settings:

REDS
+9 ; 0 ; -9 ; 0

YELLOWS
+5 ; -6 ; 0 ; +6

Leave the opacity of this layer on 100%.

>>

Step 9

Create a Brightness/Contrast layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Brightness/Contrast. My settings are these:

Brightness: 0
Contrast: -28

Leave the opacity on 100%.

>>

Step 10

Create a Hue/Saturation layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Hue/Saturation. My settings are these:

Master:
0 ; +45 ; 0

Lower the opacity to 30%.

>>

Step 11

Create a Brightness/Contrast layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Brightness/Contrast. My settings are these:

Brightness: -5
Contrast: 0

Leave the opacity of this layer on 100%.

Create another Brightness/Contrast layer, go to Layer>>New Adjustment Layer>>Brightness/Contrast. My settings:

Brightness: -5
Contrast: -10

Lower the opacity of this layer to 75%.

>>
