I loved Bend - spent a week there after New Years two years ago w/ my gf. We stayed at McMennamins - an old catholic school turned brewery and hotel. Some great restaurants. The ski area (Mt Bachelors) and the High Desert Museum as a side trip. It would be great for a conference for outdoor writing.

Awesome - thanks so much for the insight! :) It looks like a pretty nice place, but I've never been there. Been to Jackson, though. Woof - that place has changed so much in the past decade...

It was a really, really awesome place, until it turned into a tourist trap (a'la Jackson Hole) a few years ago. It's still a great place to visit. I'm personally not sure if I could stand to live there (even if I could afford it). Mt. Bachelor has great skiing. Bigger than the stuff in Colorado, with the closest thing to powder that you can find in the pacNW.
